Experiment was conducted to study the nature and magnitude of genetic variability in twelve genotypes of apple for various horticultural traits during 2018-19 in Kullu valley agroclimate of Himachal Pradesh, so as to identify promising traits on which selection can be made. Sufficient genetic variability was recorded among the genotypes under study. High heritability coupled with high genetic gain was found for the characters viz., trunk girth, tree spread, tree volume, titratable acidity, non-reducing sugars, sugar-acid ratio, fruit volume, fruit set and fruit drop.

Individual plants adapt to their immediate environment using a combination of biochemical, morphological and life cycle strategies. Because woody plants are long-lived perennials, they cannot rely on annual life cycle strategies alone to survive abiotic stresses.

The vigour and precocity of trees highly influences their efficiency in commercial production. In apple, dwarfing rootstocks allow high-density plantings while their precocious flowering enables earlier fruit production.

The transition from vegetative to floral state in shoot apical meristems (SAM) is a key event in plant development and is of crucial importance for reproductive success. In perennial plants, this event is recurrent during tree life and subject to both within-tree and between-years heterogeneity.

Fruits as a back bone of horticulture are grown over an area of 5.50 million hectares in our country with a production of over 55 million metric tones per year. Our country accounts for 10% of the total world production. Among various fruits, apple being the pre-dominant temperate fruit of India accounts for about 3% of the total fruit production of the country. India stands 8th in apple production in the world but ranks at 53rd position in terms of productivity (FOA, 2007).

Apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) is one of the most important fruit tree crops of temperate areas, with great economic and cultural value. Apple cultivars can be maintained for centuries in plant collections through grafting, and some are thought to date as far back as Roman times.

Double sterilized and pre-chilled shoot apices of Galmast cultivar obtained from mature trees (MTSTs) and in vitro raised seedlings (SBSTs) were inoculated on MS medium augmented with BA, Kn and TDZ with and without PG. Increase in BA concentration up to 5.0µM resulted in axillary shoot proliferation in about 40% shoots with a maximum of 14±0.72 shoots per explant. SBSTs (seedling born shoot tips) of same cultivar developed light yellow loose callus (LYLC) when they were cultured on MS(×½) medium fortified with BA(2.0-3.

The study was carried out in the experimental orchard of the HRTS & KVK, Kandaghat, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P.) during the year 2015-16. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with four replications. The observations were recorded on various parameters of tree growth, flowering, fruit set and yield. Among different cultivars Oregon Spur II recorded maximum increment in the trunk girth (8.10 %) and tree height (22.37 %). Tree spread (1.74 m) and tree volume (2.

Apple (Malus × domestica) is an important fruit crop cultivated worldwide. Apple orchards are exposed to a diverse set of environmental and biological factors that affect the productivity and sustainability of the apple cultivation. Many of the efforts for apple production rely on reducing the incidence of fungal diseases, and one of the main diseases is apple scab caused by the fungus Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) Wint. Apple scab is the most devastating important disease of cultivated apple causing economic losses in terms of fruit quality and yield in many apple growing areas.
