Ebook "Neural cell biology" delineates how systems biology, pharmacogenomic, and behavioral approaches, as applied to neurodevelopmental toxicology, provide a structure to arrange information in a biological model. The text reviews and discusses approaches that can be used as effective tools to dissect mechanisms underlying pharmacological and toxicological phenomena associated with the exposure to drugs or environmental toxicants during development.

The major bioactive constituents which impart the medicinal value of the herb are a group of steroidal saponins, sarsasapogenins, flavonoids, kaempferol, quercetin, rutin and polyphenols. The tuberous roots of this herbaceous plant are widely applied in the pharmaceutical as well as on biotechnological scale, in preparation of various herbal preparations because it possesses outstanding potential, and defence system.

Acrylamide (ACR) formed during heating of tobacco and carbohydrate-rich food as well as widely applied in industries has been known as a well-established neurotoxic pollutant. Although the precise mechanism is unclear, enhanced apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation have been demonstrated to contribute to the ACRinduced neurotoxicity.

Medicines to treat common colds (CC) and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) are widely used among children, but there are only few data about treatments actually applied for these diseases. In the present study we analyze the prevalence and correlations of self-medicated and prescribed drug use for the treatment of CCs and URTIs among children and adolescents in Germany.

A wide range of approaches has been applied to examine the quaternary structure of G protein-coupled receptors, the basis of such protein–protein interactions and how such interactions might modulate the pharmacology and function of these receptors. These include coimmunoprecipitation, var-ious adaptations of resonance energy transfer techniques, functional com-plementation studies and the analysis of ligand-binding data.

Regulated gene expression may substantially enhance gene therapy. Corre-lated with structural differences between insect ecdysteroids and mamma-lian steroids, the ecdysteroids appear to have a benign pharmacology without adversely interfering with mammalian signaling systems. Conse-quently, the ecdysone receptor-based gene switches are attractive for appli-cation in medicine.

The last decade or so has seen remarkable advances in our knowledge of cough. This applies especially to its basic mechanisms: the types of airway sensors, the pharmacological receptors on their membranes, the brainstem organization of the ‘cough centre’, and the involvement of the cerebral cortex in the sensations and the voluntary control of cough. With the exception of the last of these, nearly all the studies have been on experimental animals rather than humans, for obvious reasons.
