There is significant health inequity in the United Kingdom (U.K.), with different populations facing challenges accessing health services, which can impact health outcomes. At one London National Health Service (NHS) Trust, data showed that patients from deprived areas and minority ethnic groups had a higher likelihood of missing their first outpatient appointment.

Outpatient no-shows have important implications for costs and the quality of care. Predictive models of no-shows could be used to target intervention delivery to reduce no-shows. We reviewed the effectiveness of predictive model-based interventions on outpatient no-shows, intervention costs, acceptability, and equity.

In the second decade of the Internet, our patients are living longer. Despite outward appearances, many are chronically ill. Advances in care pathways and modern medical treatments allow them to live robust lives. Patients, families and carers now effortlessly access electronic information and attend their appointments with a surprising degree of familiarity of the conditions they have and the treatments they wish to have.

As a non-governmental organization in official relations with WHO, IACAPAP received an invitation from the director-general of the WHO to appoint representatives to attend the 130th session of the executive board, which was held from 16 to 23 January 2012. A close scrutiny revealed a heavily packed child and adolescent mental health agenda. Apart from the global burden of mental disorders, there were other items very relevant to CAMH.

Community management of patients with organic brain damage can be difficult. They often do not attend appointments. The community nursing team may be able to offer advice and support to the patient. A community care assessment by the social work department may be needed. If drinking continues to be problematic, sometimes patients will agree to an arrangement with their family or their social worker such that, at any one time, they only have access to small amounts of their money.

Once the Sprint has started, the Team engages in another of the key Scrum practices: The Daily Scrum. This is a short (15 minutes or less) stand-up meeting that happens every workday at an appointed time, and everyone on the Scrum Team attends; in order to keep it brief, everyone stands (hence “stand-up meeting”). It’s the team’s opportunity to report to itself on progress and obstacles. One by one, each member of the team reports three (and only three) things to the other members of the team: What they were able to get done since the last meeting; what they’re...

Even when schools are free, poor children may be forced to leave in order to work. Children may need to provide extra house- hold income or care for younger siblings so that both parents can work outside the home. Conditional cash transfers have been used as effective incentives for parents to enrol their children in school in Latin America. Families receive money on the condition that their children attend school and go to health-care appointments (see Box 7, page 25). In addition, grants can go directly to teachers and to schools.
