  • Ebook "Marine, freshwater, and wetlands biodiversity conservation" gathers together a wide range of papers reporting on key research into the biodiversity conservation of these critical and increasingly threatened habitats. Collectively these papers provide a snap-shot of the types of problems they are experiencing, and offer a wealth of topical examples which render this volume especially valuable to teachers of courses in marine, freshwater and wetlands ecology, biological conservation and ecological restoration.

  • This study focused on mangrove cover mapping by using vegetation indices in Tien Yen district. Mangrove ecosystems play a vital role in many coastal regions, protecting against erosion and storm surges, providing nursery habitats of aquatic organisms, and offering livelihoods to local communities.

  • Chlamydia-like organisms (CLO) have been found to be present in many environmental niches, including human sewage and agricultural run-of, as well as in a number of aquatic species worldwide. Therefore, monitoring their presence in sentinel wildlife species may be useful in assessing the wider health of marine food webs in response to habitat loss, pollution and disease.

  • Detailed surveys on rarely examined aquatic ecosystems often lead to the discovery of new species of high conservation value. This study directed towards the recognition of a variety of aquatic environments in Costa Rica (40 habitats, including lakes, wetlands, and small aquatic systems, e.g., ponds, ditches, puddles, tree holes, and bromeliads) established the presence of 105 species of Monogononta representing 33 genera. In total, 91 species and 19 genera were found to be new for Costa Rica, including 29 species recorded for the first time in Central America (e.g.

  • Zannichellia L. (Potamogetonaceae) is a widespread aquatic genus that is distributed in temperate and subtropical aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Because the biogeographical location of Iran includes mountain ranges and deserts that may cause different habitat types, it was assumed that these Zannichellia populations would be stronger differentiated than observed in Zannichellia from temperate regions. The present study aimed to test whether Z. palustris would demonstrate high levels of genetic differentiation over long distances and across mountain ranges.

  • Understanding the consequences of thermal and chemical variations in aquatic habitats is of importance in a scenario of global change. In ecology, the sex ratio is a major population demographic parameter. So far, research that measured environmental perturbations on fish sex ratios has usually involved a few model species with a strong genetic basis of sex determination, and focused on the study of juvenile or adult gonads. However, the underlying mechanisms at the time of gender commitment are poorly understood.

  • Repetitive elements make up significant proportions of genomes. However, their roles in evolution remain largely unknown. To provide insights into the roles of repetitive elements in fish genomes, we conducted a comparative analysis of repetitive elements of 52 fish species in 22 orders in relation to their living aquatic environments.

  • Present investigation deals with the fish faunal diversity in different habitat types in Hooghly district. Three types of floodplain water bodies were studied such as river, canal and ponds to determine the distribution of different fish species during different seasons. Results exhibit presence of 87 species in river Hooghly, 57 species in inland water and 47 species in different canals.

  • Lentic systems are a diverse set of inland freshwater habitats (Lakes and ponds) exist across the globe and provide essential resources and habitats for both terrestrial and aquatic organisms. The current work was intended to evaluate the quality of the selected ponds (Pond 1, 2 and 3) in and around Vellore district, TamilNadu. The water samples were collected to determine the physical and chemical parameters during every month in the year 2019. Water parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, Alkalinity, electrical conductivity, Chloride, Sulphate, Nitrate, Ca, Cl was studied.

  • Surajpur Lake is a prominent wetland site in National Capital Region, India, known for its rich avifaunal and aquatic biodiversity. The present study was carried out to analyse water quality and to check the relationship among various physicochemical parameters in both temporal and spatial scales from March 2012 to February 2013. The water samples were collected from five different locations on monthly basis. Standard methods were followed for the collection, sampling and analysis for 12 physicochemical parameters. The data were analyzed using PAST (version 2.15) software.

  • Aureobasidium pullulans, popularly known as black yeast, is one of the most widespread saprophytic fungus associated with wide range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. The fungus has widely been employed in production of an economically important polysaccharide Pullulan. Pullulan is a linear glucan made mainly of maltotriose repeating units. This gives the polysaccharide structural flexibility and enhances solubility.

  • In the study of hydrobiology of water basins, a separate study of higher plants is required. Higher plants growing in water for aquatic organisms remain not only a habitat, a nutrient, a source of oxygen, but they are also important in the course of many biological processes in this environment. The vegetation of aquatic and coastal aquatic plants weakens the rate of flow of water, impedes the movement of silt and mineral particles, has antierosion significance and is used to strengthen the banks of water bodies.

  • This aquatic ecosystem is the interface between upstream freshwater flow and saltwater tidal flow, creating unique aquatic habitats with significant socio-economic importance. The area is densely populated, with many people highly reliant on aquatic ecosystem productivity and related aquaculture cultivation. This study examines changes to water resources in the Hau River mouth based on hydrological variation analysis.

  • The Mangalore coast which is situated at the western part of the Indian peninsula stretching to about 22 Kms of Coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka. The healthy condition of the aquatic system depends upon its physical, chemical and biological characteristics which actually fluctuate with season and degree of pollution. Marine ecosystem is one of the richest ecosystems (Cairns & Dickson, 1971). Industrialisation, development activities in coastal zones have placed enormous stress on habitats.

  • Mining wastes can cause significant ecological destruction. Often, solid mine wastes are dumped into streams, destroying habitat and causing siltation and heavy metal and other contamination. Even when such wastes are stored out of water channels, trace materials can leach into surface waters and infiltrate into local groundwater. Fine- grained tailings can wash into local waterways and degrade streams by covering and filling coarser-grained substrates.

  • The variety of macrofauna in limnetic and estuarine ecosystems is related to the spatial arrangement of habitats with different quantitative and qualitative complexities (Heck & Crowder, 1991; Taniguchi et al., 2003; Genkai-Kato, 2007; Gullström et al., 2008). Among these habitats, submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), harbour a high diversity of molluscs, macrocrustaceans and fish, by favouring a greater survival and growth of the associated populations (Minello & Zimmerman, 1991; Pelicice & Agostinho, 2006; Rozas & Minello, 2006; Cetra & Petrere, 2007; Genkai-Kato, 2007; Hansen et al.
