Detailed surveys on rarely examined aquatic ecosystems often lead to the discovery of new species of high conservation value. Zannichellia L. (Potamogetonaceae) is a widespread aquatic genus that is distributed in temperate and subtropical aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Because the biogeographical location of Iran includes mountain ranges and deserts that may cause different habitat types, it was assumed that these Zannichellia populations would be stronger differentiated than observed in Zannichellia from temperate regions. The present study aimed to test whether Z. palustris would demonstrate high levels of genetic differentiation over long distances and across mountain ranges.

Present investigation deals with the fish faunal diversity in different habitat types in Hooghly district. Three types of floodplain water bodies were studied such as river, canal and ponds to determine the distribution of different fish species during different seasons. Results exhibit presence of 87 species in river Hooghly, 57 species in inland water and 47 species in different canals.

Lentic systems are a diverse set of inland freshwater habitats (Lakes and ponds) exist across the globe and provide essential resources and habitats for both terrestrial and aquatic organisms. The current work was intended to evaluate the quality of the selected ponds (Pond 1, 2 and 3) in and around Vellore district, TamilNadu. Surajpur Lake is a prominent wetland site in National Capital Region, India, known for its rich avifaunal and aquatic biodiversity. The present study was carried out to analyse water quality and to check the relationship among various physicochemical parameters in both temporal and spatial scales from March 2012 to February 2013. The water samples were collected from five different locations on monthly basis. Standard methods were followed for the collection, sampling and analysis for 12 physicochemical parameters. Mining wastes can cause significant ecological destruction. Often, solid mine wastes are dumped into streams, destroying habitat and causing siltation and heavy metal and other contamination.
