Viscoelastic properties of aqueous solutions of xyloglucan extracted from Hymenaea courbaril seeds (Jatobá gum) were investigated by rheology over a wide range of concentrations and temperatures. The polymer was characterized in dilute solutions by light scattering measurements and size exclusion chromatography.

Direct visual evidence obtained by atomic force microscopy demonstrates that when xanthan is adsorbed from aqueous solution onto the heterogeneously charged substrate mica, its helical conformation is distorted. Following adsorption it requires annealing for several hours to restore its ordered helical state.

An unusual heteropolysaccharide was isolated from the fruiting bodies of the medicinal mushroom Grifola frondosa, via successive cold aqueous extraction, followed by fractionation through freeze-thawing, precipitation with Fehling solution and dialysis using a membrane with a size exclusion cut-off of 500 kDa.

We examined the properties of the nanocomposite γ-Fe2O3@Chi@Pani as an adsorbent of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). As a model system, we used an aqueous solution of salmon sperm DNA, whose decreasing concentration was followed by monitoring the 260 nm UV–vis absorption.

The influence of Na2SO4 as a kosmotropic salt on the thermogelation of xyloglucan (XG) solutions was measured by rheology. The gelation occurred at lower temperatures and shorter times when the salt concentration was increased above 0.5 mol.L−1. For Na2SO4 concentrations equal to 1 mol.L−1, a not thermoreversible elastic hydrogel was obtained.

The molecular self-diffusion coefficients were accessed, for the first time, in solutions of microcrystalline cellulose, dissolved in 30 wt% and 55 wt% aqueous tetrabutylammonium hydroxide, TBAH (aq), and in mixtures of 40 wt% TBAH (aq) with an organic co-solvent, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), through pulsed field gradient stimulated echo NMR measurements.

Hydrogels based on the polysaccharide ulvan from the green macroalgae Ulva fenestrata were synthesized and evaluated as an adsorbent for heavy metals ions and methylene blue. Ulvan was extracted from Ulva fenestrata using diluted hydrochloric acid and recovered by precipitation with EtOH.

These are also appealing systems for cellulose dissolution due to their inexpensiveness, ease to recycle and low toxicity. Cellulose dissolution occurs in a narrow concentration region and at low temperatures.

The study investigates the use of fiber carriers, based on biopolymeric gums as potential candidates for cosmetic and dermatological applications, in particular for skin regeneration. Gum arabic (GA), xanthan gum (XA), and gum karaya (GK) were used as the main gum materials for the fibers, which were prepared by centrifugal spinning from an aqueous solution.

Drag reduction in fully developed turbulent pipe flow with 4 concentrations (200 to 500 wppm or mg/kg) of low molecular weight sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in aqueous solutions was investigated experimentally. Drag reduction was determined by pressure drop measurements. Maximum drag reduction achieved was 22% using 500 wppm CMC solution. To observe the impact of the presence of CMC on the flow, ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV) was employed to monitor the instantaneous velocity distributions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of 3 new polymers obtained by functionalization of a commercial poly(vinyl chloride) by grafting amino-alkyl and amino-aryl groups to extract some metal cations from aqueous solutions. A kinetic study of the extraction shows that the optimal duration of extraction was obtained with the polymer that has more chlorine atoms substituted by diethylenetriamine groups. The influence of metal extraction on the infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetry diagrams, and X-ray diffraction of metal-loaded polymers was also studied.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the properties of a modified platinum electrode with meso-tetraphenylporphyrin iron(III) complex immobilized in Nafion film and its catalytic activity in the electrochemical oxidation of selected hydroquinone and catechol derivatives. The redox activity of iron complexes of porphyrins was characterized in aqueous solutions of perchloric acid by means of cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry.

In this study, 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (L-Dopa) was solvothermally polymerized to monodisperse microspheres 1 µm in diameter. Polymerization was carried out in dimethylformamide containing appropriate amounts of urea and L-Dopa at 120 ◦ C for 24 h. Synthesis of the polymer in basic aqueous solution under hydrothermal conditions or via conventional heating resulted in the formation of bulky powders including irregularly shaped particles of the polymer. The morphologies of the synthesized polymers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Polymer quenchants based on polyalkylene glycols (PAG) are currently the most widely used type of aqueous quenchants. In this paper, the numerical simulation method by Sysweld software was used to predict the distortions of C-ring model using 100Cr6 steel when quenched in the difference media. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental values, and they also showed that the top of C-ring was opened after deformation.
