Marine brown-algae are important edible seaweed in Japanese diets, because they are rich in nutritionally beneficial elements and dietary fiber as well for their umami-taste. In contrast to these benefits, they accumulate arsenic during their growth. To overcome this inconvenience, some appropriate pre-cooking processes are desired to reduce arsenic contents.

Haliaeetus albicilla is a top raptor that can be used as a model for contaminants transfer in trophic chain. In this study we studied the accumulation of three contaminants on feathers from breeding individuals of white-tailed sea-eagle collected between 2012 and 2018 in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and its surroundings. The concentrations of two heavy metals (chromium, cadmium) and one metalloid (arsenic) were determined by inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Chromium concentrations ranged from 0.32 to 1.33 mg/kg for juveniles and between 0.68 to 2.

Rice is particularly effective, compared to other cereals, at accumulating arsenic (As), a nonthreshold, class 1 human carcinogen in shoot and grain. Nano-zinc oxide is gradually used in agricultural production due to its adsorption capacity and as a nutrient element.

Urban lake pollution is one of the serious issues due to suffering of waste discharged from householders. However, there is a gap of knowledge about the diversity of zooplankton species and how metals accumulate in zooplankton in urban ecosystems. We addressed this by determining the rule of blooming macro-zooplankton in the Truc Bach lake and levels of two essential metals: copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) and of three non-essential metals: arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) in water samples were determined.

Inorganic Arsenic (iAs) contamination of groundwater had been a major health hazard. In West-Bengal, many areas had been found to have high level of iAs in groundwater. Chronic exposure to iAs may lead to the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS). This results in DNA damage, inflammation, impairment of repair activity, thereby culminating in carcinogenesis. Higher telomerase activity may be another manifestation of iAs exposure. This is a pilot study involving 15 subjects residing in an arsenic endemic area of West-Bengal.

Simultaneous removal of some heavy metals and arsenic from aqueous solutions by phragmites australis
In this study, Phragmites australis (common reed) was transplanted into solutions added with different concentrations of Mn, Zn, Cd, Pb, and As for 30 days in the laboratory (10 days of incubation and repeated three times without changing the plant) to assess the removal of these metals and its accumulation in the plant. The results showed that high removal efficiency was achieved by growing P.australis.

Due to the high toxicity of arsenic and the poison effects to human being, identification and quantification of individual arsenic forms are important to appropriately measure the arsenic toxicity, environmental impact and health risk related to arsenic exposure. Arsenic species were quantified by HPLC-UV-HG-AAS. The separation was performed on an anion exchange Hamilton PRP-X100 (250 mm× 4,1 mm i.d.× 10 µm) column by using mobile phase A: 12 mmol/l KH2PO4- K2HPO4; pH = 6.5 and B: 24 mmol/l KH2PO4-K2HPO4; pH = 6.

The US Environment Protection Agency defines arsenic as a persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic chemical having the ability to accumulate in the air, soil, and water. In 1961, the pollution of arsenic was first discovered in Taiwan, and later in Belgium, Netherland, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Portugal, The Philippines, Ghana, USA, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Thailand. In 1992, the toxicity of arsenic was found as a disaster in West Bengal, India.
