Arsenic uptake

Genes associated with arsenite uptake and transport in rice plants (i.e., OsLsi1, OsLsi2, OsLsi3, OsLsi6 and OsABCC1) have been identified to date. However, their expression over time during the whole growth period of rice under arsenite stress conditions is still poorly understood.

Elevated arsenic content in food crops pose a serious human health risk. Rice is the main food crop is possibly cultivated on contaminated sites. A study was conducted to study effects of different oxyanions on arsenic uptake by rice plants. Shoot arsenic concentrations under phosphate treatments were comparatively lower than under the corresponding concentration of nitrate and sulphate treatments in arsenic contaminated condition. Root arsenic concentration decreased with increase in concentration of nitrate and phosphate in the nutrient medium.

Adsorption is one of the primary processes for removing arsenic from drinking water. This study focuses on developing inexpensive and effective adsorbents to remove arsenic from ground water. Eight different types of adsorbents were prepared. Some of these materials were chemically modified. The efficiency of percentage adsorption of arsenite, As(+III) on different materials were investigated at different pH, contact time and initial concentrations. Out of eight different types of adsorbents, the iron-loaded xanthated orange waste (Fe-XOW) showed high efficiency for the removal of arsenic.

The present study evaluated differential responses of AM colonized Cajanus cajan and Pisum sativum plants to As and Cd uptake and oxidative metabolism under As and Cd stress (0, 30, and 60 mg kg–1). Arsenic uptake was significantly higher than Cd uptake, which caused greater growth inhibitions and induced oxidative stress.
