We present here two cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus with normal ABI despite the presence of lower-extremity PAD, probably due to incompressible infrapopliteal arteries. In both cases, upstroke time calculated from the pulse volume waveform recording at the ankle was helpful for suspecting the presence of lower-extremity PAD.

The use of goal directed fluid protocols in intermediate risk patients undergoing hip or knee replacement was studied in few trials using invasive monitoring. For this reason we have implemented two different fluid management protocols, both based on a novel totally non-invasive arterial pressure monitoring device and compared them to the standard (no-protocol) treatment applied before the transition in our academic institution.

Assessment of fuid responsiveness is problematic in intensive care unit patients. Lung recruitment maneuvers (LRM) can be used as a functional test to predict fuid responsiveness. We propose a new test to predict fuid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients by analyzing the variations in central venous pressure (CVP) and systemic arterial parameters during a prolonged sigh breath LRM without the use of a cardiac output measuring device.

The use of vasoconstrictor can affect the dynamic indices to predict fluid responsiveness. We investigate the effects of an increase of vascular tone on dynamic variables of fluid responsiveness in a rabbit model of hemorrhage, and to examine the ability of the arterial pressure surrogates dynamic indices to track systolic volume variation (SVV) during hypovolemia under increased vasomotor tone.

Cardiac Index (CI) is a key-parameter of hemodynamic monitoring. Indicator-dilution is considered as gold standard and can be obtained by pulmonary arterial catheter or transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD; CItd). Furthermore, CI can be estimated by Pulse-Contour-Analysis (PCA) using arterial wave-form analysis (CIpc).

A relatively new uncalibrated arterial pressure waveform cardiac output (CO) measurement technique is the Pulsioflex-ProAQT® system. Aim of this study was to validate this system in cardiac surgery patients with a specific focus on the evaluation of a difference in the radial versus the femoral arterial access, the value of the autocalibration modus and the ability to show fluid-induced changes.

Whether during spontaneous breathing arterial pressure variations (APV) can detect a volume deficit is not established. We hypothesized that amplification of intra-thoracic pressure oscillations by breathing through resistors would enhance APV to allow identification of a reduced cardiac output (CO). This study tested that hypothesis in healthy volunteers exposed to central hypovolemia by head-up tilt.

To assess the validity of central and pulmonary veno-arterial CO2 gradients to predict fluid responsiveness and to guide fluid management during liver transplantation. Methods: In adult recipients (ASA III to IV) scheduled for liver transplantation, intraoperative fluid management was guided by pulse pressure variations (PPV).

Central arterial pressure can be derived from analysis of the peripheral artery waveform. The aim of this study was to compare central arterial pressures measured from an intra-aortic catheter with peripheral radial arterial pressures and with central arterial pressures estimated from the peripheral pressure wave using a pressure recording analytical method (PRAM).

Cardiac output (CO) is a key measure of adequacy of organ and tissue perfusion, especially in critically ill or complex surgical patients. CO monitoring technology continues to evolve. Recently developed CO monitors rely on unique algorithms based on pulse contour analysis of an arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveform.

Both osteoarthritis (OA) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are prevalent conditions which often coexist. Vascular involvement in the pathogenesis of these diseases, as well as increased cardiovascular risk in OA patients give occasion to investigate arterial stiffness in OA. The aim of this study was to establish associations between OA and arterial stiffness.

To evaluate alterations of some arterial stiffness and arterial pulse wave time indices in military aircrews under simulating hypoxic conditions at altitude of 5,000 meters. The interventional study was conducted on 97 male military aircrews; Hypobaric Oxygen Chamber HPO 6+2 (AMST, Republic of Austria) was used to mimic hypoxia at 5,000m altitude in 20 minutes; and AngioScan M01 (Angio Electronic, Russian), a device was used to perform a noninvasive examination of arteries by assessing some pulse wave parameters.
