  • Fungal keratitis is a major ophthalmic problem. In view of the importance in timely diagnosis and treatment of keratitis which would otherwise lead to serious complications like loss of vision, hypopyon formation, endopthalamitis, etc., this study was intended to bring into light the fungal etiological agents in suppurative keratitis. The specimen was collected from suppurative keratitis cases irrespective of prior antibiotic treatment during the period of one year from March 2012 to February 2013.

  • Copra samples were colllected from local farmers orchard at Dapoli, Ta. Dapoli, Dist. Ratnagiri (MS). From these collected samples, five fungus pathogens viz., Aspergillus niger, A. fumigates, A. oryzae, Chaetomium spp., and Lasiodiplodia theobromae were isolated, which were used for cultural studies. These were cultured on five different culture media, Potato dextrose agar medium, Malt extract agar medium, Potato carrot agar medium, Sabouraud’s dextrose agar medium and Czapek’s yeast extract agar media. All five media used supported the growth of these five fungi in considerable amount.

  • Use of biocontrol agents against soil borne pathogen is gaining importance in the present situation for eco-friendly management of soil borne diseases. Bioefficacy of indigenous Trichoderma spp has greater efficacy against soil borne pathogens of pulses. Native Trichoderma isolates were collected from soil rhizospheres of paddy, groundnut, brinjal and tomato grown in the Agronomy field and Central farm of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar and named as Isolate 1, Isolate 2, Isolate 3, Isolate 4, Isolate 5 respectively.

  • The primary objective of this study is to explore fungal pigments as a source for dyeing colorants. Owing to the conflicting reports on the safety of textile and leathers during dyeing and due to the indiscriminate use of non-permitted colors, there is an urgent need to identify natural pigment sources as safe textile colorant. This study critically examines the potentials of fungi as sources production of biocolorant. Along with an established pigment producing fungus, Monascus, newer fungi have been explored and reported.

  • Microorganisms play important roles in the recycling of agricultural wastes. Composting is the degradation of organic materials through the activities of diverse microorganisms. The compost generated by bioconversion of agro-residues offers several benefits such as enhanced soil fertility and soil health which can lead to increased agricultural productivity, improved soil biodiversity, reduced ecological risks and a healthier environment. This investigation examined the microbial community dynamics, loads and identification of microbiota at various stages of composting process.

  • Nosocomial fungal infections in neonatal intensive care units are a serious emerging problem. However, the role of fungal bio-aerosols as the source of such infections has not been explored in the NICU setting. Hence, this study was done to know the fungal composition of aerosols in NICU as the source of neonatal nosocomial infections. 1m3 of NICU air was sampled fortnightly over 12 months onto SDA with chloramphenicol using a sieve type air sampler.

  • Entomopathogenic fungi suppress the diverse group of insect pest such as coleopterans, lepidopterous and sucking pest. Wide spread incidence of Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus tamarii was observed during extensive and repeated survey covering different agro ecological niches of Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik and Beed districts of Maharashtra (India) on insect cadavers infected with fungi. From the insect cadavers the fungal isolates were isolated on PDA media.

  • Current research efforts are directed towards native entomopathogenic fungi which are highly virulent to insect pests to develop efficient and eco-friendly bio-pesticides. From the insect cadavers fifteen different fungal isolates were isolated on DOC2-50% selective media and were identifying as isolates of Aspergillus tamari, A. niger and A. flavus. All the fifteen isolates showed variation in all the morphological characters studied. Highest mean colony diameter (mm) was reported in isolate EPF-14 at all the time intervals.

  • The present study describes acute Aspergillosis in a five years old female African grey parrot kept in captivity in Meo Aviary, Meerut. The birds in the aviary were housed in uplifted cage system and vaccinated against endemic diseases. The affected bird exhibited the symptoms of depression, anorexia, dyspnea and open beak breathing and died within 48 hours of showing clinical signs. At necropsy, whitish nodules were observed on the trachea, lungs and air sacs. The affected organs were collected for cultural isolation of the possible organism. Aviary visit indicated dusty environment.
