Assist extraction of essential oil
-
Ebook "Essential oils as reagents in green chemistry" provides a valuable reference for the contribution of essential oils in the green chemistry, mainly in terms of their characteristics corresponding to their compositions, the development of their extraction technologies including both conventional and green process (e.g. microwave, ultrasound), and their sustainable applications as antioxidants, antimicrobials, insecticides, green solvents and synthons for the green synthesis.

Essential oils from fresh and dry leaves of Vitex negundo (HD-Fresh, HD-Dry) were obtained by traditional hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MHD) (MHD-Fresh, MHD-Dry). The chemical constituents of essential oil of leaves are analyzed by GC/MS technique.

The process of enzyme assisted extraction of essential oil from the leaves and branches of the Vietnamese aromatic plant Cinnamomum cassia was studied and optimized using a Box-Wilson central composite design consisting of 05 independent variables (pH, temperature T, time τ, concentration of the enzyme Laccase, and concentration of the enzyme Cellic Htec2), and two dependent variables (reducing sugar and yield of essential oil).

The use of a mixture of both enzyme systems was more effective than using them separately. Under optimal conditions, an increase in oil yield of 41.7 % was achieved, while distillation time was shortened from 8 to 5 hours. The enzyme treatments did not change the qualitative composition of the essential oils. However, significant changes in the percentages of cinnamic aldehyde (69.74 % to 85.6 %) and cinnamyl acetate (17.2 % to 1.34 %) were observed.
