Upland rice grows on 19 million ha, about 15% of the world's rice plantation [2]. The production of upland rice is crucial to agricultural economy of many countries [15]. The yield of upland rice is very low with an average of about 1 t/ha. Drought is a major constraint to the productivity of upland rice.

Understanding the genetic complexity of traits is an important objective of small grain temperate cereals yield and adaptation improvements. Bi-parental quantitative trait loci (QTL) linkage mapping is a powerful method to identify genetic regions that co-segregate in the trait of interest within the research population. However, recently, association or linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) became an approach for unraveling the molecular genetic basis underlying the natural phenotypic variation.

We reported previously on the purification and partial characterization of a putative microtubule-associated protein (MAP) from bovine adrenal cor-tex with an approximate molecular mass of 250 kDa. Eph receptor tyrosine kinases regulate many important biological pro-cesses. In the present study, we explored the substrate specificity of the EphA4 receptor tyrosine kinase using peptide arrays. We define a consen-sus substrate motif for EphA4 and go on to identify and test a number of potential EphA4 substrates and map their putative site(s) of phosphoryla-tion.
