Asthma cost savings

Therapeutic reference pricing (TRP) based on the WHO daily defined dose (DDD) is a method frequently employed for the cost-containment of pharmaceuticals. Our objective was to compare average drug use in the real world with DDD and to evaluate whether TRP based on DDD could result in cost savings on maintenance medication and the total direct health expenditures for asthma patients treated with Symbicort Turbuhaler (SYT) and Seretide Diskus (SED) in Hungary.

The prevalence of physician-diagnosed-asthma has risen over the past three decades and misdiagnosis of asthma is potentially common. Objective: to determine whether a secondary-screening-program to establish a correct diagnosis of asthma in those who report a physician diagnosis of asthma is cost effective.

Research strongly suggests that controlling such environmental asthma triggers as allergens and air pollutants would substantially reduce childhood asthma. For example, Lanphear and colleagues recently estimated that elimination of residential risk factors for asthma would reduce 39% of asthma diagnoses in the United States, at a cost savings of $402 million (57).
