"Standard Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel" covers high-strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates, and bars for welded, riveted, or bolted construction intended primarily for use as structural members where savings in weight [mass] or added durability are important. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of the steel in most environments is substantially better than that of carbon structural steels with or without copper addition. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, this steel can be used bare (unpainted) for many applications.

This specification covers high-strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates, and bars for welded, riveted, or bolted construction but intended primarily for use in welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than that of carbon structural steels with or without copper addition (see Note 1). When properly exposed to the atmosphere, this steel is suitable for many applications in the bare (unpainted) condition.

This specification covers high-strength, low-alloy, hotand cold-rolled sheet and strip in cut lengths or coils, intended for use in structural and miscellaneous purposes, where savings in weight or added durability are important. These steels have enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance and are supplied in two types: Type 2 contains 0.20 % minimum copper based on cast or heat analysis (0.18 % minimum Cu for product check).

The presence of organic sulfur-containing oil in the environment is harmful to animals and human health. The combustion of these compounds in fossil fuels tends to release sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere, which leads to acid rain, corrosion, damage to crops, and an array of other problems. The process of biodesulfurization rationally exploits the ability of certain microorganisms in the removal of sulfur prior to fuel burning, without loss of calorific value.

Coating systems based on zinc rich primer and fluoropolymer top coat were exposed for 8 years at different atmospheric stations in Vietnam: Ha Noi, Ha Long and Nha Trang. For comparison the coating system with zinc rich primer and polyurethane topcoat was also tested. The degradations of coating systems were evaluated by gloss measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

The results of corrosion survey for stainless steel tanks used in water storage at various areas are presented. More severe corrosion is observed for the area with higher airborne salinity. Damages are revealed at both outer and inner surfaces for tanks made of Type 304 and 201 steels exposed in coastal conditions. Corrosion products examined by visual inspection and SEM-EDX technique showed relatively distinctive characteristics for the outer and inner tank surfaces which are attributed to different corrosion mechanisms initiated by corrosive chloride accumulated on steel surfaces.
