Atopic condition
-
Canine atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common condition that often requires multimodal therapy. Including a diet in the multimodal management of AD may reduce medication doses, saving pet owners money and reducing side effects.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a complex multisystemic syndrome with heterogeneous presentation. Most often, there is a clinical history of asthma or other atopic conditions, and current presentation generally includes signs of cutaneous or pulmonary involvement.

Early wheezing and asthma are relevant health problems in the tropics. Mite sensitization is an important risk factor, but the roles of others, inherent in poverty, are unknown. We designed a birth-cohort study in Cartagena (Colombia) to investigate genetic and environmental risk factors for asthma and atopy, considering as particular features perennial exposure to mites, parasite infections and poor living conditions.

Growing evidence shows that atopic dermatitis (AD), food allergy (FA), allergic rhinitis, and asthma are largely determined during the first 1000 days (time elapsed from conception to the 2nd birthday).

Childhood allergic diseases have a major impact on a child’s quality of life, as well as that of their parents. We studied the coexistence of reported allergies in children who use asthma medication. Additionally, we tested the hypothesis that asthma severity is greater among children with certain combinations of co-morbid allergic conditions.

As a result of adaptation to desert conditions, camels acquire the ability to produce diluted milk. This involves the production of milk with a higher water content when the animal is dehydrated than when it is fully watered. They do this by withdrawing water preferentially from the intestines under the action of prolactin and oxytocin. The ability to dilute milk under similar conditions of water stress has also been demonstrated in women and in cows. Milk dilution is not known in other mammals.

Hand eczema is one of the most common clinical conditions treated and evaluated both among general dermatologists and in dermatological departments. Hand eczema is the most common occupational skin disease and one of the most frequent occupational disorders overall. Hand eczema can be long lasting and incapacitating. Research within the last decades has expanded our knowledge significantly. This knowledge has yet to find its way into general dermatological textbooks. D.S.Wilkinson provides a thorough introductory chapter on the definitions and problems of classification.

In the five years since the first edition of this book was published, there has been an explosion in new information relating to the nature of dry skin and its treatment. Investigators from various disciplines, including dermatologists, pharmacists, chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, physiologists, pharmacologists, and even psychologists have advanced our knowledge tremendously. We now understand that the stratum corneum has a surprisingly large number of functions in maintaining the physiologic stability and homeostasis of the skin and mind.

Narrow-band UVB phototherapy: This therapy (TL2 Philipps lamps emitting at 311 nm) has proved to be the most beneficial for psoriasis and looks promising in the treatment of some other skin conditions including atopic eczema and vitili- go, pruritus, lichen planus, polymorphous light eruption and early cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Eczema is a type of dermatitis and these terms are often used synonymously (atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis). Eczema is a reaction pattern that presents with variable clinical findings and the common histologic finding of spongiosis (intercellular edema of the epidermis). Eczema is the final common expression for a number of disorders, including those discussed in the following sections. Primary lesions may include erythematous macules, papules, and vesicles, which can coalesce to form patches and plaques.

Allergic Conjunctivitis This condition is extremely common and often mistaken for infectious conjunctivitis. Itching, redness, and epiphora are typical. The palpebral conjunctiva may become hypertropic with giant excrescences called cobblestone papillae. Irritation from contact lenses or any chronic foreign body can also induce formation of cobblestone papillae. Atopic conjunctivitis occurs in subjects with atopic dermatitis or asthma.

Chronic otitis externa is caused primarily by repeated local irritation, most commonly arising from persistent drainage from a chronic middle-ear infection. Other causes of repeated irritation, such as insertion of cotton swabs or other foreign objects into the ear canal, can lead to this condition, as can rare chronic infections such as syphilis, tuberculosis, or leprosy.
