Attributes in hybrid maize

Two maize hybrids (NK-6240 and 900 M GOLD) were compared for yield and yield components and correlations were worked out among the yield parameters at various target yield levels in an experiment conducted at Mudhol Agricultural Research Station of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka, during kharif 2014.

A field experiment was conducted at Research Farm, Department of Agronomy; Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi VishwaVidyalaya Jabalpur during 2012 consisting of seven newly developed maize hybrids and one composite variety for yield parameters in rainfed condition. The results of present study revealed that, the yield attributing parameters viz., number of cobs/ plant, grain rows /cob, number of grain /row, total grain /cob, cob weight and seed index were found significantly highest in hybrid Proagro Ly 620 as compared to most of the hybrids.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif season, 2016 at S.V. Agricultural College, Tirupathi to study the ‘Influence of Agro-climatic indices on morphological and growth attributes of maize (Zea mays L.)’. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with twelve treatments. Three maize hybrids D.S 900M, Pinnacle and CP818 with four dates of sowing (June II FN, July I FN, July II FN and August I FN).

Initial evaluation of in breds for general combining ability (gca) enables plant breeders to discard undesirable ones and identify those that are potential for the production of superior hybrids. In this context, 11 parental in breds which are contrasting for Late Wilt Disease (LWD) reaction (4 LWD resistant and 7 LWD susceptible) and yielding ability were selected and were evaluated for their gca related to grain yield plant-1 , its attributing traits and reaction to LWD infection.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most diversified and versatile crop grown worldwide under varied agro-climatic condition. However, a significant amount of reduction in grain yield has been reported because of heat stress. Being a complicated character that depends on multiple component traits, direct selection is in effective for grain yield. Considering these aspects, a study was conducted to determine the magnitude and extent of trait interdependency among yield and yield attributing characters under heat stress condition using forty five maize hybrids.

Maize, a crop cultivated worldwide, was investigated for colonization endophytic bacteria at different growth stage in different plant parts. Such bacterial interactions have high potential to enhance maize growth and development by means of plant growth promoting activities. 82 morphologically different endophytic bacterial isolates were isolated from hybrid maize variety, Pusa Extra Early Hybrid Maize (PEEHM-5) from root, stem and leaf tissues on different nutrient media at vegetative, flowering and maturity stages of growth.

A set of sixteen inbred lines were evaluated to assess the ability of inbred lines, they were crossed in half diallel mating design. A total of 120 single cross hybrids were developed and evaluated in simple lattice square design at K block experimental plots of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru. The observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants. Analyses of variances revealed that, all the hybrids were differed significantly for the traits under consideration which indicates the presence of genetic variability.
