Research information on response of crops to phosphorus and potassium levels generated very scanty and as such generating further information is very much essential specially in low phosphorus and potassium containing soils to combat the present situation. With this in view, the present study was initiated in low phosphorus and potassium soils to assess the effect of phosphorus and potassium levels on growth, yield and economics of finger millet in Alfisols of Ramanagara district of Karnataka.

Thirty blast resistant lines of finger millet were evaluated in a field study to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and quality attributing traits. The analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among the entries for all the traits studied.

In the current study, two forms of finger millet flour viz., malted and unmalted were used to prepare finger millet enriched probiotic fermented milk products. Both forms were incorporated in toned milk at 10%, 15%, 20% rates and fermented using probiotic Lactobacillus helveticus MTCC 5463 and Streptococcus thermophiles MTCC 5460. Fermented product without finger millet served as control. Products were analysed for titratable acidity, sensory and microbiological parameters.

A field experiment was conducted to study the response of finger millet to phosphorus fertilizer, PSB and VAM during kharif, 2018 on sandy loam soils at Agricultural Research Station, Perumalapalle, Tirupati, Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University, Andhra Pradesh. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block design with nine treatments and replicated thrice. Among the phosphorus management practices, application of 100% RDP + PSB @ 750 ml ha-1 + VAM @ 12.

Field experiment was conducted during Kharif from 2010 to 2015 at GKVK, Bangalore to know the feasibility of cultivation of fingermillet in Melia dubia. There were six treatment combinations comprising intercrop of finger millet planted in different spacings with Melia dubia and finger millet alone as control. Results revealed that, sole finger millet recorded significantly higher grain (26.1 q ha-1 ) and straw yield (5865 kg ha-1 ), which was attributed to higher growth and yield attributes like number of productive tillers (6.17 hill-1 ) and 1000 seed weight (3.69 g).

It is important to find the cutting force required to cut the crop stalk in designing a harvester for finger millet. The selection of power source and optimization of pertinent machine parameters are very important design considerations. Therefore, a laboratory setup was required to measure the mechanical strength involved and the influence of attributing parameters in cutting the crop.
