Water is a vital commodity and it is essentially used for maximizing crop production and productivity. Drip irrigation is gaining popular among the farmers because of its high efficiency and productivity. This study was conducted during the Kharif season of 2018 and 2019 to find the best automated drip irrigation system among the time based, volume based, soil moisture sensor based and tensiometer based drip irrigation in comparison with conventional drip irrigation system.

Water is the most valuable resource in the world and is playing a crucial role in daily activities of living beings on the earth. To meet the ever increasing demand, conservation and management of water resource is very important. Conventional methods of irrigation, like surface and subsurface flooding leads to scarcity of water, which can be reduced by adopting drip or trickle irrigation. Drip irrigation system can be controlled through different automation techniques.

Water which forms the most important ingredient in the process of photosynthesis is desired for its unobstructed growth. It should be supplied to the soil just to satisfy its field capacity above which the water being supplied is a waste. To save water during the growing rainy season and to make use of this saved water during the other seasons at farm level gives scope to development of various water saving technologies.

Many areas of agricultural fields are effectively over or under irrigated due to spatial variability in water infiltration and runoff of rainfall and irrigation, crop water use and irrigation depth. Under-irrigated areas are subject to water stress, resulting in production loss, while over-irrigated areas suffer from plant disease and nutrient leaching. This research presents the design of microcontroller based soil moisture sensor was developed at College of agricultural Engineering, Bapatla.

The study was conducted at Technology Park (Plasticulture Farm) of CTAE, Udaipur, Rajasthan to evaluate performance of automated and conventional drip system for okra crop during year 2019. The Uniformity Coefficient (CU), Distribution Characteristic (DC) and Emission Uniformity (EU) were found to be highest at the head and decreases with increase in distance along the lateral for both irrigation systems. It was found that the average values of all evaluation parameters except DC, were found to be highest for automated drip system.
