  • An efficient regeneration protocol was established for a rare plant species, Begonia coptidifolia. Using leaf explants, adventitious shoots were induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium using various concentrations (1.0–10.0 mM) of three cytokinins, 6-benzyladenine (BA), thidiazuron (TDZ) and kinetin (KIN). However, adventitious shoots could not be induced on MS medium supplemented with auxins [α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)] tested in the 1.0–10.0 mM range.

  • Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.), is an important perennial crop cultivated across the globe. The demand for quality planting materials is increasing across the world for the establishment of new orchards, rejuvenation of existing orchards and production of quality nuts. Plant tissue culture is an alternate approach for the production of quality planting material. In this investigation, influence of auxin and cytokinin on somatic embryogenesis in coconut is studied using sliced mature embryos as explants in modified Y3 media supplemented with various concentrations of 2,4-D and kinetin.

  • Five maize lines prevalently used by breeders in the maize program were screened for their ability to form type II callus. Mature seeds were used as explant for in vitro culturing. One inbred line showed high embryogenic response and formed friable, type II calli and also exhibited successful plant regeneration. Ten culture media compositions based on Murashige and Skoog (1962) salts thus investigated differed with respect to the combinations of concentrations of auxins (IBA, NAA, picloram, 2, 4-D) and cytokinins (BAP, kinetin) were used.

  • Anther Culture or microspore culture is a very important and useful tool in plant breeding for efficient production of haploids and subsequent doubled haploid plants in many species, limited research has been conducted with Brassica –rapaas it is more recalcitrant in cell and tissue culture than other Brassicas. In order to access the effect of genotype on microspore embryogenesis in B –rapa, two high yielding brown Sarsoon cultivars (KS-101 and KOS-1) were studied for their response to haploid plant regeneration through Anther culture. Flower buds of 2.2 mm to 2.

  • The phenylpropanoid pathway is responsible for the synthesis of numerous compounds important for plant growth and responses to the environment. In the first committed step of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, the enzyme phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) deaminates L-phenylalanine into trans-cinnamic acid that is then converted into p-coumaric acid by cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H).

  • Plant growth regulator or phytohormone may be defined as an organic substance produced naturally in plants controlling growth and other functions at a site remote from its place of production in minute quantities. Plant growth regulators include auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, growth retardants and growth inhibitors. The production of poor quality fruits is a matter of common experience. It would be therefore worthwhile to improve the yield and quality of fruit crops by foliar application of plant growth regulators.

  • Present investigation was carried out to determine the optimum level of different plant growth regulators for rapid shoot multiplication, rooting and hardening of micropropagated plantlets of Aloe vera. The experiment was laid out using completely randomized design (CRD) with ten replications during 2018-19. Auxiliary shoot explants were inoculated on MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of cytokinin (BAP 0.5 – 6.0 mg/l) alone and BAP (0.5-6.0 mg/l) with auxin (NAA 0.1 – 0.6) in combination for direct shoot bud proliferation.

  • Wheat is the second most produced staple food crop in world. An efficient method for in vitro micro propagation and genetic transformation of wheat are crucial for both basic and applied research. The present study was initiated with a view to develop a regeneration system in 4 genotypes of wheat cultivars HD2888, HD2329, DBW148, and DBW88 as a prerequisite to transformation. The mature embryos were excised from seeds and cultured on MS medium supplemented with high and low concentrations of cytokinins and auxins respectively.

  • An in vitro protocol for plant regeneration through organogenesis was established for Picrorhiza kurroa Royle Ex. Benth (Scrophulairaceae). The plant is a principle source of glycoside that is Picroside-I, Picroside-II and Kutkoside. Callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with cytokinin (Kn or BA) and auxin (2,4-D/IBA/NAA) using leaf, petiole and stem explants. Shoots were regenerated on MS media with BA (1.5 to 2.5 mgl-1 ) combined with auxin (IBA or NAA) in the range of 0.5 to 2.5 mgl-1 . Rooting was initiated with full or half media supplemented with 0.

  • Plant hormones are signal molecules produced within the plant, and occur in extremely low concentrations. Phytohormones determine the formation of flowers, stems, leaves, shedding of leaves, and development and ripening of fruits. They shape the plant, affecting seed growth, time of flowering, sex of flowers, senescence of leaves and fruits. Hormones are vital for plant growth and lacking them, plants would be mostly a mass of undifferentiated cells. Plant growth regulators include auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, growth retardants and growth inhibitors.

  • Growth and productivity of higher plants are adversely affected by various environmental stresses which are of two main types, biotic and abiotic, depending on the source of stress. Broad range of abiotic stresses includes osmotic stress caused by drought, salinity, high or low temperatures, freezing, or flooding, as well as ionic, nutrient, or metal stresses, and others caused by mechanical factors, light, or radiation.
