Ebook "Nutrient use efficiency in plants: Concepts and approaches" presents a broad overview of topics related to improvement of nutrient use efficiency of crops. Nutrient use efficiency (NUE) is a measure of how well plants use the available mineral nutrients. It can be defined as yield (biomass) per unit input (fertilizer, nutrient content). NUE is a complex trait: it depends on the ability to take up the nutrients from the soil, but also on transport, storage, mobilization, usage within the plant, and even on the environment.

Chromium is necessary for insulin function, nutrient uptake and regulation of major metabolism as well as boosting of immune system amongst others; available in vegetables, the cheapest source for the majority of people living in developing countries. Seven commonly consumed vegetables in south west Nigeria were collected from four major markets in the region, thoroughly mixed and prepared for laboratory analysis.

Coastal dunes are characterised by plant species adapted to harsh conditions. Salinity and other factors (soil pH, nutrients, and climate events) vary along the landward gradient. The current study investigated the effects of environmental factors on the occurrence and composition of coastal dune plants. Ellenberg ecological indicator values (EIVs), species tolerance values (TVs), and species niche models for salinity, nutrient availability, and soil reaction were determined.

Homemade diets are a worldwide trend, and many recipes are currently available on websites but may not be considered balanced. This study aimed to evaluate if the number of ingredients, supplement, or vegetarian/ vegan-only ingredients included in a recipe influence the nutrient content of homemade diets for dogs and cats.

Soils are a key component of agricultural productivity, and soil microbiota determine the availability of many essential plant nutrients. Agricultural domestication of soils, that is, the conversion of previously uncultivated soils to a cultivated state, is frequently accompanied by intensive monoculture, especially in the developing world.

Stink bugs are an emerging threat to crop security in many parts of the globe, but there are few genetic resources available to study their physiology at a molecular level. This is especially true for tissues such as the midgut, which forms the barrier between ingested material and the inside of the body.

Environmental variation in the amount of resources available to populations challenge individuals to optimize the allocation of those resources to key fitness functions. This coordination of resource allocation relative to resource availability is commonly attributed to key nutrient sensing gene pathways in laboratory model organisms, chiefly the insulin/TOR signaling pathway. However, the genetic basis of diet-induced variation in gene expression is less clear.

Protease inhibitors are defense proteins widely distributed in the plant kingdom. By reducing the activity of digestive enzymes in insect guts, they reduce the availability of nutrients and thus impair the growth and development of the attacking herbivore.

Water availability and nutrient-status of soils play crucial roles in seedling establishment and plant survival in coal-spoiled areas worldwide. Restoration of spoils pertains to the application of proper doses of nutrients and water, and selection of particular plant species for efficient revegetation.

Biochar is a carbon rich substance obtained from thermal decomposition plant biomass through the process of pyrolysis. The special characteristics of the biochar are its effectiveness in retaining most of the nutrients and maintaining them available to plants. The present field experiment was therefore conducted to investigate the effect of biochar application on nutrients concentration and uptake by soybean in acidic soils. Biochar produced from coconut shell was applied at the rates of 5, 7.5 and 10 t ha-1with two rates of recommended lime (100 and 50%).
