Infection in the oviduct (salpingitis) is the most common bacterial infection in egg laying hens and is mainly caused by Escherichia coli. The disease is responsible for decreased animal welfare, considerable economic loss as well as a risk of horizontal and vertical transmission of pathogenic E. coli.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains cause infectious diseases in poultry. Resveratrol is extracted from Polygonum cuspidatum, Cassia tora Linn and Vitis vinifera, and displays good antimicrobial activity. The present study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm effect of resveratrol on APEC in vitro.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) can cause various extraintestinal infections in poultry, resulting in massive economic losses in poultry industry. In addition, some avian E. coli strains may have zoonotic potential, making poultry a possible source of infection for humans. Due to its extreme genetic diversity, this pathotype remains poorly defined.

Among other factors, infectious diseases are the real threat to the poultry development. Of the various infectious microorganisms Escherichia coli and Mycoplasma are of prime importance. These microorganisms persist for reasonably long periods in the flocks and there by lead to high economic losses through mortality, loss of weight and production. E. coli cannot readily infect the air sacs unless they are previously invaded by Mycoplasma gallisepticum alone or in combination of either infectious bronchitis or Newcastle disease virus.

The poultry industry, especially chicken production has in recent times faced a major set-back due to devastating effects of APEC Extended Spectrum BetaLactases (ESBL) producing organisms. This research aimed at investigating antimicrobial susceptibility profile and diversity of ESBL producing avian pathogenic Escherichia coli(APEC) among fecal cloacal swaps of scavenging local chickens based on the various housing systems. The APEC isolates were determined by virulence factor profiling and by Kirby-Baeur disc diffusion, 42% of the APEC isolates were found to be ESBL producers.

Poultry industry in India is facing major economic setback due to persistent disease problems like colibacillosis. The incidence and severity extra intestinal infection like complicated chronic respiratory disease have increased rapidly. In this context the role of E.coli in causing extra intestinal infection needs to be explored. The study of virulence determinants associated with these bacteria help us in understanding the pathogenic mechanism of disease.
