Babesiosis in dogs

Feline and canine babesiosis is an important tick-borne disease caused by parasites of the genus Babesia. The disease has a worldwide distribution and causes serious health problems in domestic and wild canidae and felidae.

The present study was conducted in Veterinary Clinical Complex, College of Veterinary Science, Tirupati over a period of nine months to diagnose the Babesia infection. 235 dogs suspected for babesiosis were collected and subjected for diagnosis using conventional and molecular techniques.

A two and a half year old male Labrador dog was brought with history of in appetence, pyrexia, weakness, vomiting, blood in urine and lateral recumbencysince a week. Clinical examination revealed icteric visible mucousmembrane, dehydration, high fever (105 o F), increased respiratory rate and enlarged superficial lymph nodes with presence of ticks on body surface. The present study was carried out to investigate the haemato-biochemical changes and therapeutic management of canine babesiosis. Five male and 2 female dogs between 3-4 years old were presented to TVCC, Veterinary College, Durg and Private Clinic, Bhillai (Chhattisgarh) with a history of anorexia, tick infestation, lethargy, weakness and discolouration of the urine (haemoglobinuria). Blood samples were collected from the study group animals for the estimation of haemao-biochemical parameters.

Canine babesiosis is a hemoprotozoan parasite affecting dogs. The goal of this study was to provide an overview of molecular examination of babesiosis and heamato-biochemical changes in canine babesiosis infected dogs. In this study, 8 cases infected with Babesia were confirmed by means of hematological, biochemical and multiplex PCR. The most common clinical signs were anorexia, pale or icteric mucous membranes, high rise of temperature and dark urine colour.
