Backbone of the Indian economy

India is the world's largest milk producer and primarily an agricultural society where animal husbandry is the backbone of the national economy. In Rajasthan, dairying provides millions of marginal farmers and landless labourers for their livelihood so it is a major economic activity of rural people. The state faces constant drought and famine, which often leads to crop failure because most of the agriculture is fed with rain. In this climate scenario, the dairy sector provides permanent annual income to a large number of farmers.

Agriculture, which forms the backbone of Indian economy, depended heavily on the traditional knowledge. In this study, we have documented some of the traditional practices pertaining to seed selection, treatment, storage and sowing methods prevalent among farmers in Haveri district, Karnataka state, India. Traditional methods were adopted for seed selection and treatment. The seeds were checked for their germination potential during Navratri. Applying kemmannu, neem oil, mixing with dry neem leaves, mixing with ash are common methods of seed storage.

Agriculture and allied sector is the backbone of Indian economy. Agriculture and allied sector not only provides food and nutritional security but also create job opportunity for two-thirds of the population. Among various agriculture and allied farming, Poultry farming is one of the most efficient components of the farmer’s economy as it provides eggs, meat, feathers and manures with small capital investment and fewer workforces. India stands 3rd and 5th position in egg and meat production with annual production of 64.45 billion eggs and 2.47 million ton meat respectively.

In India, agriculture production is a backbone of Indian economy, but in recent past agriculture in gross domestic product is declining 14%, average size of land holding is gradually decrease 85% of the farming community. Under the continuing decrease of land holding, horizontal extension of land is not possible. For this reason, vertical integration of farm enterprises will make farming more cost-effective and reliable.
