Backyard rearing

The rearing and marketing of capons, a traditional culture, is restricted only to the Tribal and Adivasi communities of Assam. They used to rear the caponized indigenous chicken traditionally with no supplemented feed in the backyard for holy purposes. No recordable experiment has been found to be undertaken scientifically on production potentiality of rearing indigenous chicken cockerels till today even at national level.

A study was conducted to understand consumer preferences and market potential for the backyard poultry rearing system in Kumi district of Uganda. This study revealed that 70% of the consumers included poultry products in their menus often and 10% included daily.

Economic independency is a key factor for social and cultural empowerment of women. Rearing small scale Vanaraja chicken can be promising for nutritional security and subsidiary income. Rearing indigenous chickens traditionally in Assam faces inherent constraints like low production, high mortalities hindering lucrative return. Realizing needs and to avert aberrant practices demonstrations on raising Vanaraja chickens in semiintensive system (30 chicks to each of 40 farmers) were conducted in farmers’ backyards. During brooding, limited concentrate feeding was done for 2 weeks.

However, the level of monthly income from backyard poultry is low still it is an important source of supplementing earnings. It provides eggs and meat for family consumption and, to some extent, cash income thereby, enhances rural livelihoods.

The present study was conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kota district of Rajasthan. Choma kot village was selected from the identified on the basis of maximum numbers of beneficiaries under NICRA. Ten farmers from each village were selected randomly, ten of them having Pratapdhan poultry (beneficiaries under NICRA) and rest ten having desi poultry (non-beneficiaries) were selected thus making a sample of 10 respondents.

A study was conducted on pratapdhan birds under backyard poultry rearing in Bhilwara district of Rajasthan. During the study two block selected in which five villages of each block selected randomly. Ten backyard poultry farmers randomly selected in each village out of 100 respondents. Pratapdhan chicks provided by Krishi Vigyan Kendra under ATMA, Bhilwara for the respondent of economic point of view.20 chicks provided each respondent. Majority of respondents belong to general caste (46 %) Rajput only.

A study has been conducted on a total 1200 no. of chicks out of which 600 numbers (200 each of Indigenous, Vanaraja and Crossbred) were reared under intensive system. All the types of chicken were fed uniform diet of Chick (0-8 weeks), Grower (9-20 weeks) and Layer (above 20 weeks) ration prepared with conventional feedstuffs as per BIS (1992). Remaining 600 numbers (200 each of Indigenous, Vanaraja and Crossbred) were distributed among 30 beneficiaries for backyard system of rearing.

The present study was conducted on 600 Vanaraja birds reared in backyard system at Udalguri district of Assam under Tribal Sub Plan project. The overall body weight of male and female Vanaraja birds at 40th week of age was recorded as 3980.53 ± 330.74 and 3080.55 ± 143.22 grams, respectively. Age of hen at first egg laying was 162.55 ± 11.43 days. Egg production of Vanaraja bird was recorded as 146 ± 14.66 per bird per year. The benefit cost ratio of male at 16 week and female Vanaraja bird at 1 year was recorded as 2.05:1 and 1.96:1, respectively.

They rear desi chicken with low egg and meat production in backyard system. For developing the rural poultry farming, improved backyard poultry birds rearing is of very important.

Rearing of backyard poultry has been an age old practice of tribal community. But the traditional method of rearing poultry is not remunerative enough to maintain their livelihood. In order to enhance the income from backyard poultry farming, appropriate intervention through training is needed and for that the areas of training need are required to be assessed critically.

The present study was conducted in four villages of Kesla and Hoshangabad blocks of Hoshangabad District. For household income and food & nutritional security through women empowerment and to find better performance among the narmada nidhi and local non descript (ND) breed, 25 female and 5 male birds of each breed are distributed to 10 women’s of each 4 village in these 2 blocks for backyard rearing.

The major climate challenge is drought because of deficit rainfall observed in every year. The source of irrigation for cultivation of crops is through water streams and borewells.
