Bambusa vulgaris

Five age gradations of seven Bamboo species viz., Bambusa bambos, Dendrocalamus strictus, Bambusa vulgaris var. vulgaris, Bambusa vulgaris var. striata, Bambusa balcooa, Bambusa tulda and Bambusa polymorpha were subjected to physical and chemical analysis in order to recommend suitable species at reasonable rotation age for pulp and paper production.

The present crisis has emphasized human dependency on bamboo with quality planting materials. A study focused on the effect of the different concentrations of IBA (0 ppm, 100 ppm, 200 ppm, 300 ppm) on the sprouting and rooting behaviours of 5 bamboo species viz. Dendrocalamus strictus, Bambusa vulgaris, B. nutans, B. tulda and B. bambos found in coastal Odisha in order to get an idea for mass multiplication and biomass production to meet the multifarious demands of bamboo based sector.

Studies were undertaken to elicit information on performance of Bambusa balcooa and Bambusa vulgaris across five agro climatic regions as well as different age gradations, association among the biometric attributes. Bambusa balcooa proved its significant phenotypic superiority in terms of all the biometric attributes studied. The performance of Bambusa balcooa across the agro climatic regions viz., North Eastern Zone, Northern Zone, Western Zone, Cauvery Delta Zone and Southern Zone was also consistent and higher than the Bambusa vulgaris and Bambusa bambos.
