Banana (Musa acuminata and M. acuminata x M. balbisiana)fruit cell walls are rich inmannans, homogalacturonans and xylogalacturonan, rhamnogalacturonan-I, and arabinogalactans, certain forms of which is considered to have immunomodulatory activity.

Bananas (Musa spp.) are an important crop worldwide. Most modern cultivars resulted from a complex polyploidization history that comprised three whole genome duplications (WGDs) shaping the haploid Musa genome, followed by inter- and intra-specific crosses between Musa acuminata and M. balbisiana (A and B genome, respectively).

The banana (Musa sp., AAA) genome is constantly increasing due to high-frequency of somaclonal variations. Due to its large diversity, a conventional numerical and morphological based taxonomic identification of banana cultivars is laborious, difficult and often leads to subject of disagreements.

Banana is a well-established fruit crop of Gujarat region and more specifically cultivar Grand Nain is well adopted due to its good yield potential and quality parameters. Banana is nutrient loving crop so application of nitrogen and bio-fertilizers plays significant role in quality improvement of crop. By considering this fact presented experiment “Quality of banana cv. Grand Nain influenced by nitrogen and biofertilizers” was taken during 2018-19.

A study was conducted to investigate the chemical and mineral composition of cultivars belonging to four different genomic groups. Results revealed that B genome rich cultivar, Karpuravalli (ABB), had higher dry matter and starch, less moisture, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, total and reducing sugars, when compared with A genome rich cultivar, Robusta (AAA) and Poovan (AAB). Similarly cultivars with B genome had higher nitrogen, lesser calcium, potassium, zinc and iron, while mixed influence was noticed with regard to minerals like phosphorus and magnesium.

Studies were conducted to know varietal response on plantlet regeneration through macropropagation in banana. Many varieties and cultivars were grown in different regions of country and there is a need to know which variety will respond well to macro-propagation. Three commercially cultivated varieties were taken for experiment viz., Ney Poovan, Rajapuri and Grand Naine.

Banana is a highly exhaustive crop which requires large quantities of mineral nutrients for rapid growth and development, thus it readily responds to applied nutrients. Major nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium play an important role in the vegetative and reproductive phases of crop growth, depending on the cultivar.

Genetic uniformity of in vitro raised plants is a prerequisite for production of quality planting material of banana. Embryogenic cultures were induced from immature male flower buds of two important cultivars of banana, ‘Rasthali’ (Silk-Musa AAB) and ‘Grand Naine’ (Cavendish-Musa AAA). Cell suspensions were established and regenerated plants were evaluated for their genetic stability using 10 inter simple sequence repeat markers.

Ethylene inhibitor compound 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), sanitizer chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) were studied to know the postharvest behavior and storage life of banana fruits (cultivar Yelakki), harvested at second stage of its ripening. Banana fruits were pretreated with the above chemicals either singly or in combination and stored in corrugated fiber board boxes at ambient condition. The 1-MCP treatment had delayed the colour change of peel as well as fruit softening and extended t h e shelf life by suppressing the respiration.

In order to extend the shelf life of banana cultivar Tella Chakkerakeli was fumigated with 1-methylcyclopropane (1-MCP) at four different concentrations (100, 200, 300 and 400 ppb) @ 24h exposed time and stored at ambient conditions. Among all the treatments, 400 ppb was found to be an effective in extending shelf-life, highest retention of cell wall degrading enzyme such as pectin methylestarase and antioxidant enzymes, peroxidase and catalase. The entire 1-MCP treated banana showed better results over control (kept at open air @ 24h).

The entire 1-MCP treated banana showed better results over control (kept at open air @ 24h).

Globally, banana is the maximum distributed fruit crop and is the fourth most important commodity and is grown in more than 130 countries across the world, continuously exhibiting a spectacular growth pattern worldwide in an area of 6507.7 million ha producing 98946 million tones. India is the largest producer of banana in the world. There are diverse germplasms of banana traditionally cultivated in different regions of India having remarkable genetic differences. Traditional procedure to characterize banana plants by morphological descriptors has many limitations.

Banana in India is mostly a crop of marginal farmers with little affordability to tissue culture plants which are 4-8 times higher than the sucker cost. Hence, a simple and farmer friendly method has been developed to bridge the gap in supply of healthy planting material with an affordable cost through macro-propagation. This method generates plantlets from sword suckers and initial explants so farmers can adopt this especially to enhance the planting material production of traditional cultivars.
