  • The results showed that the designed primers were specific to only Foc isolates from race 1 and tropical race 4 (TR4). The detection efficiency of the designed primers was compared to other published primers through optimized SYBR green-based real-time PCR assay and nested PCR. The new primers could detect the Foc genomic DNA at a minimum of 5 pg and target pathogen in a symptomless banana sucker. The specificity and sensitivity of the new primers were comparable to the published real-time PCR primers and the nested PCR assay.

  • A field experiment was conducted at University Orchard, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore to standardize the cropping density and nutrient requirement on growth and development of banana cv. Quintal Nendran (AAB) during 2015-17. The studies were carried out by planting banana suckers at three spacing levels viz., S1–1.8x1.8 m (3086 plants ha-1 ), S2 - 2.1 x 2.1 m (2267 plants ha-1 ), S3 - 2.1 x 2.4 m (1984 plants ha-1 ) with four fertigation levels viz., F1 - 75 per cent, F2 - 100 per cent, F3 - 125 per cent and F4 - 150 per cent RDF.

  • An experiment was carried out at ICR farm, Department of Horticulture during 2015-2017 to study the effect of number of suckers per hill on growth, yield and quality of banana cv. Malbhog (AAB) in ratoon crop. The treatments were T1 (mother plant + 1 sucker), T2 (mother plant + 2 suckers), T3 (mother plant + 3 suckers), and T4 (mother plant + 4 suckers) with two spacing - S1 (2.1 m x 2.1 m) and S2 (2.5 m x 2.5 m) for all the treatments. One treatment with recommended package of practices (control) was also included in the experiment.

  • Banana in India is mostly a crop of marginal farmers with little affordability to tissue culture plants which are 4-8 times higher than the sucker cost. Hence, a simple and farmer friendly method has been developed to bridge the gap in supply of healthy planting material with an affordable cost through macro-propagation. This method generates plantlets from sword suckers and initial explants so farmers can adopt this especially to enhance the planting material production of traditional cultivars.

  • The present investigation was conducted in the ‘Central Orchard’ main campus of the Kerala Agricultural University with the major objective of enhancing quality sucker production as well as to standardise the most economical physical method of sucker activation technique in banana cv. Nendran (AAB). The treatments consisted of physical cuts given at different heights namely half pseudostem cut, entire cut and one that involving replanting entire clump in trenches in oblique manner.

  • Banana is one of the important fruit crops and food source for million people in developing countries. In the study explants (Suckers) of two banana cultivars were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations of BAP and Kinetin sole and in combination for shoot initiation and multiplication.

  • An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, AAU, Jabugam during seasons of the year 2015-16. The experiment consisted of eight treatment combinations comprised of four varieties (viz. V1.Grand Naine, V2.Robusta, V3.Mahalaxmi and V4.William) and two planting materials (viz. P1.Tissue culture plants and P2. Suckers), and conducted in RBD with factorial concept with four replications. The soil of the experimental field was sandy loam in texture. All the plants were planted at 1.80 m spacing with one plant per hole.

  • Banana (Musa sp.) is the second most important fruit crop in India next to mango. Its year round availability, affordability, varietal range, taste, and nutritive medicinal value makes it the favorite fruit among all classes of people. Suckers are the unwanted plants that grow around the mother plant and greatly affect the mother plant growth, taking essential nutrients from them. It also affects the banana bunch growth hence affecting the physical properties and their characteristics which ultimately affects the quality.

  • The present study was carried out to monitor somaclonal variations of banana cv. Ney Poovan (AB) during micropropagation using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Sword suckers were used as explants and regenerated on MS media supplemented with BAP alone, BAP + Kinetin and TDZ at varying levels of concentrations. The regenerated shoots were again subcultured on MS medium fortified with plant growth regulators at different concentrations. Rooting was obtained on ½ MS medium supplemented with 2.00 mg/l IBA and 2 g/l of activated charcoal.

  • Banana is one of the most important and remunerative cash crops grown round the year in Ethiopia. The energy and nutritional status of banana are much higher than other common tropical and subtropical fruits. The objective of this study was to establish in vitro root development protocol in Poyo and Grand naine varieties from sucker. For root induction suckers of Poyo and Grand naine were cultured on MS basal medium that contained 30 g/l sucrose, 6 g/l agar and vitamins.

  • The effect of optimized dosage of bio-agents as soil application and as sucker treatment for the management of root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita and spiral nematode, Helicotylenchus multicinctus in banana was studied under field condition. Application of Pseudomonas fluorescens 100g as soil application resulted in 68% reduction of root knot nematode and spiral nematode populations over control. The P. fluorescens soil treatment also recorded enhanced the plant height (274.0 cm), number of leaves (14.0/plant), pseudostem girth (55.9 cm) at 270 days after planting.
