In multiuser rate allocation problem, a set of transmitters want to transmit the video sequences to corresponding receivers through a common channel that is shared by all transmitters. Since the transmitters compete for the same resource, i.e., channel bandwidth, they form a non-cooperative social network. The key problem in this social network is how to e±ciently and fairly allocate data rate among di®erent users.

We introduce a novel multi-resource allocator to dynam- ically allocate resources for database servers running on virtual storage. Multi-resource allocation involves pro- portioning the database and storage server caches, and the storage bandwidth between applications according to overall performance goals. The problem is challenging due to the interplay between different resources, e.g., changing any cache quota affects the access pattern at the cache/disk levels below it in the storage hierarchy.

Recently, considerable research effort has been put into the direction of integrating the broadband wired ATM [1] and wireless technologies. In 1996 the ATM Forum approved a study group devoted to wireless ATM, WATM. WATM [2–4] aims to provide end-to-end ATM connectivity between mobile and stationary nodes. WATM can be viewed as a solution for next-generation personal communication networks, or a wireless extension of the B-ISDN networks, which will support guaranteed QoS integrated data transmission.

In this chapter we present some of our results concerning source models for H.261 coded VBR (variable bit rate) video. Video services have been forecasted to be a substantial portion of the traf®c on emerging broadband digital networks. Statistical source models of video traf®c are needed to design networks that delivery acceptable picture quality at minimum cost, and to control and shape the output rate of the coder.

In this switching mechanism, a circuit is allocated to every piece of complete information (called a call). This circuit allocation is all the way from the sending to the receiving computer or terminal. It stays in place throughout the duration of the call until the sending (or receiving) side signals that it is not needed any more. In more formal terms, we say that a fixed bandwidth is guaranteed throughout the communication session.
