  • The study derives the closed-form solution of the valuation of deposit insurance under forbearance for banks whose capital requirements are either solely based on the 1988 Basel Accord (BA) approach or the VaR-based approach. The study also demonstrates that the deposit insurance liability under BA rises monotonically with portfolio risk, but it is much less risk-sensitive under VaR. It implies that the VaR-based capital regulation is more stable in containing deposit insurance losses and failure probability than the BA capital regulation.

  • This paper presents an application of the split-population duration model in identifying operating strategies and structural attributes of commercial banks that increased their financial and temporal endurance (translated into probability and duration of survival, respectively) during the late 2000s recession.   • This study attempts to quantify the shocks to a banking network and analyze the transfer of shocks through the network. We consider two sources of shocks: external shocks due to market and macroeconomic factors which impact the entire banking system, and idiosyncratic shocks due to failure of a single bank. The external shocks we considered in this study are due to exchange rate shocks. An ARMA/GARCH model is used to extract i.i.d. residuals for this purpose.
