The wild relatives of crop species represent a potentially valuable source of novel genetic variation, particularly in the context of improving the crop’s level of tolerance to abiotic stress. The mechanistic basis of these tolerances remains largely unexplored. Here, the focus was to characterize the transcriptomic response of the nodes (meristematic tissue) of couch grass (a relative of barley) to dehydration stress, and to compare it to that of the barley crown formed by both a drought tolerant and a drought sensitive barley cultivar.

Barley is relatively sensitive to Aluminum (Al) toxicity among cereal crops, but shows a wide genotypic difference in Al tolerance. The well-known Al-tolerant mechanism in barley is related to Al exclusion mediated by a citrate transporter HvAACT1 (Al-activated citrate transporter 1). A 1-kb insertion in the promoter region of HvAACT1 gene results in a dramatic increase of its expression level, which only occurs in some Al-tolerant cultivars. However, Al-tolerant Tibetan wild barley accession XZ29 did not have the 1-kb insertion.

Net blotch caused by Pyrenophra teres f. teres is a major foliar disease of barley. Infection can result in significant yield losses of susceptible cultivars of up to 40%. Of the two forms of net blotch (P. teres f. teres and P. teres f. maculata), P. teres f. teres (net form of net blotch) is the dominant one in Russia.

The effect of Aluminum toxicity on seed germination and other biochemical parameters of two varieties of Barley (RD2052 and RD2552) differing in their sensitivity to aluminum toxicity were studied. In present study different concentrations of Al (Control, 2mM, 4mM and 6mM) were used to impose Aluminum toxicity under in vitro condition and amelioratingrole of Salicylic acid and Ascorbic acid by seed priming method was studied.

The development of Heterodera avenae was studied on four resistant cultivars (BH 393, BH959, RD 2035 and DWRB 91) and one susceptible cultivar (BH902). After 20 days of germination inoculation was done with second stage juveniles @ 250 J2 / pot. Plants of each cultivar were uprooted at 15 days interval after the inoculation and observations were taken till adults were formed. Roots of uprooted plants were stained with 0.1% acid fuchs in lactophenol and observations on the development stages were taken by mounting the nematode dissected out of root in lactophenol.

The micro pot experiment was conducted to know the effect of nutrient sources on nutritional quality of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Highest nutritional quality were computed in N80, P50, K50, S40, Zn5 kg ha-1 with FYM 5 ton ha-1 (T5) and lowest in absolute control in different cultivars of barley. The nutritional quality of all the nutrients increased with an increase in graded levels of fertilizers with integration of FYM.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2016-17 at Research farm of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana involving two barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties: V1 (DWRUB 52, Two-rowed) and V2 (PL 807, Six-rowed) sown on three sowing dates viz. D1 (25th October), D2 (10th November), D3 (25th November) and three irrigation levels viz. I1 (Recommended 4 post sowing irrigation), I2 (Skip at vegetative stage), I3 (Skip at anthesis stage) replicated thrice in factorial split plot design to investigate heat summation indices in relation to crop phenology under changed microclimate.

Nitrogen (N) is the most common limiting factor for crop productivity worldwide. An effective approach to solve N deficiency is to develop low N (LN) tolerant crop cultivars. Tibetan annual wild barley is well-known for its wide genetic diversity and high tolerance to poor soil fertility.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is an important crop cultivated across the world. Drought is a major abiotic factor compromising barley yield worldwide, therefore in modern spring barley cultivars superior seed and malting quality characteristics should be combined with reasonable level of drought tolerance.

Development of crop cultivars with high low nitrogen (LN) tolerance or nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is imperative for sustainable agriculture development. Tibetan wild barley is rich in genetic diversity and may provide elite genes for LN tolerance improvement. Little has been known about transcriptional responses of the wild barley to chronic LN stress.

Oats rank around sixth in world cereal production statistics, following wheat, maize, rice, barley and sorghum. In many parts of the world, oats are grown for use as grain as well as for forage and fodder, straw for bedding, hay, haylage, silage and chaff. Livestock grain feed is still the primary use of oat crops, accounting for an average of around 74 percent of the world’s total usage. In India, breeding of oats begun in nineteen-eighties and is grown as the most important cereal fodder crop in North Western, Central India, extending to the eastern regions.

A study was carried out in 2016-17 and 2017-18 growing seasons with 4 different “barley” cultivars viz., V1-BH 393, V2-BH 902, V3-BH 946 and V4-BH 885 sown under different growing environments, i.e., D1- 3 rd November; D2- 18th November; D3- 3 rd December and D4- 19th December. The correlations among growth, weather and agrometeorological parameters, yield and yield attributes, soil moisture and canopy temperature were investigated using correlation analysis during vegetative and reproductive phases of crop. Yield studies had positive association with growth parameters during both phases.

Boron is an essential micronutrient for plants and animals; however, it can be toxic when present at high concentrations. The purpose of this study was to understand the mechanisms of boron tolerance in the Turkish barley (Hordeum vulgare) Anadolu cultivar. For this purpose, 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) was used to screen differentially expressed proteins for both control and boron-stressed Anadolu barley genotypes.

It was found that 0.1 mM SA had a greater alleviating effect, decreasing the freezing injury in both varieties for at least 10 days after the application. Moreover, 0.1 mM SA had a greater effect on alleviation in Tokak by increasing the ice nucleation activity of apoplastic proteins extracted from the leaves.

A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the response of six rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars (Ribe, Tri-445, Serhat 92, Kros 424, Baldo and Rocca) to NaCI salinity. While salinity inhibited the growth of all six cultivars, Baldo, Ribe, Rocca and Kros-424 were less affected than the other cultivars.
