Automatic signal-feature extraction algorithms are crucial for profile processing in bioinformatics. Both baseline drift and noise seriously affect the position and peak area of signals. An efficient algorithm named the derivative passing accumulation (DPA) method for simultaneous baseline correction and signal extraction is presented in this article.

This paper examines the ability to capture the observed baseline temperature and precipitation (1986-2005) in the Ba River Basin from GCM outputs, RCM outputs, bias-corrected GCM outputs and bias-corrected RCM outputs by analyzing statistical indicators between historical simulations and observed data in 4 temperature and 6 rainfall stations. Bias-corrected results of both GCM and RCM have significantly smaller errors compared to the unbias-corrected ones.

We present a novel OCR error correction method for languages without word delimiters that have a large character set, such as Japanese and Chinese. It consists of a statistical OCR model, an approximate word matching method using character shape similarity, and a word segmentation algorithm using a statistical language model. By using a statistical OCR model and character shape similarity, the proposed error corrector outperforms the previously published method. When the baseline character recognition accuracy is 90%, it achieves 97.4% character recognition accuracy. ...

We present a novel approach to grammatical error correction based on Alternating Structure Optimization. As part of our work, we introduce the NUS Corpus of Learner English (NUCLE), a fully annotated one million words corpus of learner English available for research purposes. We conduct an extensive evaluation for article and preposition errors using various feature sets. Our experiments show that our approach outperforms two baselines trained on non-learner text and learner text, respectively. ...

Arabic handwriting recognition (HR) is a challenging problem due to Arabic’s connected letter forms, consonantal diacritics and rich morphology. In this paper we isolate the task of identification of erroneous words in HR from the task of producing corrections for these words. We consider a variety of linguistic (morphological and syntactic) and non-linguistic features to automatically identify these errors. Our best approach achieves a roughly ∼15% absolute increase in F-score over a simple but reasonable baseline. ...

Establishing a network performance baseline requires collecting key performance data from the ports and devices that are essential to network operation.1 Gather symptoms - Troubleshooting begins with the process of gathering and documenting symptoms from the network, end systems, and users. Stage 2 Isolate the problem - The problem is not truly isolated until a single problem, or a set of related problems, is identified.

The aim of this study was to analyse the thickness of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) of pulmonary tuberculosis patients on ethambutol and isoniazid. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study where patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis requiring chemotherapy, including ethambutol and isoniazid, were imaged using scanning laser polarimetry. Their mean baseline RNFL thickness and various scanning laser polarimetry parameters of both eyes were measured 2 weeks after the commencement of chemotherapy.

Baseline values for HPV type prevalence in cases of cervical cancer are important because these can reveal whether the types in cancers are changing as more of the population is vaccinated and whether new vaccines are targeting the correct types. A meta-analysis looked at papers published between 1990 and 2010 on more than 30,000 cervical cancer cases. 4 The most common HPV types found, in order of decreasing prevalence, were HPV 16 (57 percent), 18 (16 percent), 58 (4.7 percent), 33 (4.6 percent), 45 (4.5 percent), 31, 52, and 35.

Some of the biggest challenges facing the information technology (IT) world are the expenses that are incurred as a result of network outages. The negative impact of these expenses should make it a high priority of network professionals to be able to diagnose and correct a network problem as efficiently as possible. To help accomplish this, a baseline should be established to provide a snapshot of the configuration of a network while it is performing at an acceptable level.
