Some basic concepts of analogue signals are introduced in this section. You will learn the basic functions of an analogue electronic system, viz. transformation and generation of signals of continuous nature. Here, signal transformation refers to all kinds of manipulation such as filtering (selecting signals of a certain range of frequencies) and amplification (enlarging the magnitude of a signal). Signal generation in the context of analogue electronics can be taken to mean the construction of a signal with a specified waveform, as in the case of a sinusoidal wave generator.

The title of this textbook, Biosensors: From Electric Circuits to Immunosensors, implies that we are going to learn both electric circuitry (in relation to conventional sensors such as temperature sensors) and biosensors (such as antibody-based immunosensors). The idea of putting these two topics together into a single book came from my decision to add biosensor topics to the “Sensors and Controls” class taught at the University of Arizona. In this book, we have used both MKS and CGS units. USCS units or FPS units used in the US Edition of the book have been converted to SI units throughout the text and problems. However, in case of data sourced from handbooks, government standards, and product manuals, it is not only extremely di‰cult to convert all values to SI, it also encroaches upon the intellectual property of the source. Also, some quantities such as the ASTM grain size number and Jominy distances are generally computed in FPS units and would lose their relevance if converted to SI.
