Basis of micronutrients

Distribution of available micronutrients and their relationship with different soil properties was studied in one hundred soil samples collected from different locations of 25 villages representing the soils of Garhi Tehsil of Banswara district, Rajasthan. The soils were analysed for textural separates, physico-chemical properties and status of available micronutrients. Texture of soils varied from sandy clay loamy to clay loam. On the basis of pH and EC values, these soils were found neutral to moderately alkaline and non-saline in nature.

In this study, the morpho-biological characteristics of the Daphnia magna Straus culture and microalgae of the genera Ankistrodesmus, Botryococcus, Scenedesmus, Chlorococcum and Chlorella were studied. Protein and fat storage of micronutrients was determined. It has also been found that when Daphnia magna cultures are propagated on the basis of micronutrients, their growth rate and biomass production.

An investigation was carried out to study the effect of seed hardening with micronutrients and botanicals on seed quality parameters in chickpea. The chickpea cv. PUSA-362 was imposed to various seed hardening treatments viz., Neem leaf extract @ 5%, Tulsi leaf extract@ 5%, Papaya leaf extract@ 5%, Moringaleaf extract @ 5%, CaCl2@ 1% and 2%, KCl @ 1% and 2%, KNO3 @ 1% and 2%, KH2PO4 @ 1% and 2%. The above treated seeds along with control for their seed quality parameters.

Specific micronutrient deficiencies may affect maternal and foetal health. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy may cause foetal brain damage and mental retardation in infants. Vitamin A deficiency increases the risk in pregnant women of infection and anaemia, may cause blindness during pregnancy and early lactation, and has been associated to an elevated risk of HIV mother-to-child transmission. Folate deficiency may cause severe foetal neural tube defects like anencephaly and spina bifida.

A ‘textbook’ plant typically comprises about 85% water and 13.5% carbohy- drates. The remaining fraction contains at least 14 mineral elements, without which plants would be unable to complete their life cycles. These essential mineral elements include six macronutrients – N, K, P, S, Mg and Ca – which are present in relatively large amounts in plant tissues (mg g−1 of dry tissue), and several micronutrients, including Fe and Zn, which are present in smaller amounts (µg g−1 of dry tissue).
