  • This study describes the synthesis, characterization, and application of a new p−sulfonatocalix[4]arenebased silica resin (calix-resin 5) for the extraction of selected metals, namely Pb, Cd, Co, Ni, Cu and Fe, from canola oil. Synthesis, morphology, purity, and elemental composition of calix-resin 5 were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy.

  • Agro industries like banana processing industries result in large amount of waste generation and they are usually dumped causing serious environmental pollution. Since banana wastes are putrid organic wastes, they are ideal for anaerobic digestion. Hence utilizing these wastes for biogas production is a sustainable way of deriving energy from waste so that the two major concerns, energy demand and environmental protection is achieved. The paper describes the analysis of the physico-chemical characteristics of banana wastes viz. banana peel, pseudo stem and fruit bunch stem.

  • Batch experiments were conducted to study the impact of the use of a mixed inoculum on the methane yield for wet, mesophilic, discontinuous anaerobic digestion of food waste. Three different inocula were used: cow rumen, AD (anerobic digestion) sludge and UASB (Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) sludge. The results indicated that the use of a mixed inoculum does not lead to any improvements in the methane yield.

  • This research investigates the synthesis of biogas from vegetable wastes through anaerobic digestion in batch reactors. The batch test was carried out for a period of 9 weeks, during which the volume of biogas produced from the reactor ad its methane content, was measured. A laboratory test with 2.5 L bio digester was operated in batch system for the study. The feed material for biogas was a mixture of vegetable wastes which include carrots, tomato, potato and cabbage. The biogas production of the period of the study decreased from a volume of 2015 ml to 235 ml in the ninth week.

  • The compost, landfill waste, paddy soil and kitchen waste were used for development of microbial inoculum for the enhancement of biogas production from cattle dung under anaerobic batch conditions. Six digesters were set up containing, biogas slurry, compost, paddy soil, landfill waste and kitchen waste along with cattle dung in different concentration. The dehydrogenase activity, cellulase activity, N, P, K content, volatile solids, total solids, total volatile fatty acids, C/N ratio and biogas production was studied in samples at different time intervals.

  • The present investigation was carried out in Renewable Energy Laboratory of the Department of Renewable and Bio Energy Engineering, College of Agriculture Engineering & Technology, CCS Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar. Biogas production was recorded for 70 days (ten weeks) in batch type digestion. Anaerobic digestion of fresh cattle dung (CD) and paddy straw (PS) in different ratio was carried out under batch system. Paddy straw was mixed with cattle dung in different percentage 5%, 7%, 15%, 22.5% and one control. Methane content in all the reactors varied between 60-62%.

  • The main objective of this research is to convert the waste paddy straw collected from farm fields after harvesting into useful biogas generation. For this, a newly designed paddy straw plant is developed and fabricated to utilize quintals of paddy straw to produce biogas for domestic purposes and an alternative to the LPG cylinder for Indian families. Due to favorable climatic conditions of the northern region of India; the plant was developed as a batch system to fulfill the cooking needs.

  • The cassava starch production in India is mainly concentrated in small to medium scale factories, which generates 30,000 to 40,000 liters of effluent per tonne of sago produced. The effluent from these industries is acidic and highly organic in nature having COD of 5000 to 7000 mg/l during the season and 1000 to 5000 during the off-season. These effluents pose a serious threat to the environment and quality of life in the both rural and cities.

  • The potential of using anaerobic digestion for the treatment of poultry blood has been evaluated in batch assays at the laboratory scale and in a mesophilic semi-continuous reactor. The biodegradability test performed on residual poultry blood was carried out in spite of high inhibitory levels of acid intermediaries. The use of activated carbon as a way to prevent inhibitory conditions demonstrated the feasibility of attaining anaerobic digestion under extreme ammonium and acid conditions.

  • BCS class III drugs suffer from a drawback of low permeability even though they have high aqueous solubility. The objective of current work was to screen the suitability of glyceryl monooleate (GMO)/Pluronic F127 cubic phase liquid crystals precursors for permeation enhancement and in turn the bioavailability of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), a BCS class III drug. Spray-drying method was used for preparation of TDF loaded liquid crystal precursors (LCP) consisting of GMO/Pluronic F127 and lactose monohydrate with an ability to in situ transform into stable cubic phases upon hydration.
