Chronic disease is the leading cause of premature death globally, and many of these deaths are preventable by modifying some key behavioural and metabolic risk factors. This study examines changes in health behaviours among men and women at risk of diabetes or cardiovascular disease (CVD) who participated in a 6-month lifestyle intervention called the My health for life program.

The proportion of the older Thai population is increasing rapidly. Lifestyle may impact active ageing in later life. Interventions that empower older Thai adults to initiate and carry out lifestyle changes are needed. This study applied the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, a tool for improving lifestyle changes, with the aim of exploring interactions among older Thai adults when participating in group activities.

Other than activity and exercise, lifestyle practices such as not smoking and healthy nutrition, well established for preventing and managing lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases (i.e., heart disease, cancer, hypertension, stroke, obstructive lung disease, diabetes, and obesity), are less emphasized in the physical therapy guidelines for addressing chronic pain, e.g., back pain.

Head and neck cancer is an important cause of ill health. Survival appears to be improving but the reasons for this are unclear. They could include evolving aetiology, modifications in care, improvements in treatment or changes in lifestyle behaviour.

Excess body weight and sub-optimal lifestyle are modifiable causes of breast cancer and other diseases. There is little evidence that behaviour change is possible within screening programmes and whether this is influenced by prior knowledge of disease risk.

Among seniors, food choice and related activities are affected by health status, biological changes wrought by aging and functional abilities, which are mediated in the larger arena by familial, social and economic factors. Determinants of healthy eating stem from individual and collective factors. Individual components include age, sex, education, physiological and health issues, psychological attributes, lifestyle practices, and knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours, in addition to other universal dietary determinants such as income, social status and culture.

Health-promoting activities usually contribute to the prevention of a variety of diseases as well as enhancing a positive feeling of health and vitality. They consist of nonmedical interventions, such as changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and the environment. Such activities may require structural improvements in society to enable the majority of people to take part in them. Structural improvements imply societal changes that make healthful choices easier.

A lot of focus has been put on lifestyle changes since the last prevention policy paper was published. Key objectives have been defined with ambitious targets to reduce smoking, the harmful use of alcohol, overweight, diabetes and depression. There is, of course, a reason for this: there is a close relationship between today’s major chronic diseases and people’s behaviour. The focus on lifestyle and health promotion is therefore an obvious consequence of disease prevention. But lifestyle changes are not easy to make.
