  • Mangroves are a diverse and rich ecosystem, in which many animals are associated, including benthos. Species composition and occurrence of these animals are driven by the mangroves and tidal conditions. To examine how the benthic animal is distributed in mangrove habitats from northern Vietnam, two surveys in 2019 were conducted in Tien Hai Wetland Nature Reserve, which resulted in a total of 89 species, belonging to 56 genera and 35 families of zoobenthos.

  • The antibacterial agent triclosan (TCS) is added to many daily-used consumer products and can therefore reach the aquatic environment via treated wastewater and potentially harm aquatic ecosystems. A 120 days pond mesocosm study was conducted in order to investigate the fate of TCS in water and sediment, its bioaccumulative potential in different biota as well as the effects of TCS and its main transformation product methyl-triclosan (MTCS) on plankton, periphyton, macrophytes, and benthos communities.

  • Encouraged by the friendly acceptance of the first edition and stimulated by numerous requests and comments from the community of meiobenthologists, this second edition updates my monograph on meiobenthology. The revised text emphasizes new discoveries and developments of relevance; it has been extended by adding chapters on meiofauna in areas not covered before, such as the polar regions, mangroves, and hydrothermal vents.

  • The world ocean has somewhere between 10 000 and 100 000 seamounts more than 1 km tall and as many as 1 000 000 features over 100 m tall. These are some of the least understood habitats on the planet. Large seamounts, particularly those close to or within the photic zone, support and attract rich biotic communities and are important for the status of marine food webs and biodiversity. Intensive boom-and-bust fi sheries have depleted fi sh populations and damaged or destroyed associated benthic communities.
