This is an empirical investigation into the development of the accounting profession in Sri Lanka in the post-independence era. Taking the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) as a case, the study researches the accounting professionalization process during the past five decades (1959-2010). Thus, the study focuses on the struggles and interactions between competing groups and organisations within the accounting profession.

Dietary patterns explained between 8 and 20% of the variation in serum EDC concentrations, with explained variance being the highest for PCBs in both cohorts. In conclusion, dietary patterns high in animal-based products appear to be associated with persistent EDC concentrations among pregnant women. Diet explains more variation in PCB concentrations than for other persistent EDC classes.

This paper concerns with a problem of supoptimal finite-time control for a class of linear large-scale delay systems. The system under consideration is subjected to the state and control delays interacted between subsystems. Based on improved LMI approach combining with new estimation techniques, we derive sufficient conditions for solving H∞ finite-time control and guaranteed cost control of the system. A numerical example is given to illustrate the validity and effectiveness of the theoretical results.

The study’s purpose was to examine 1) how goals used in clinical practice for patients with musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are distributed in classes based on ICF, 2) if goal classes were associated with patient characteristics and 3) whether goal classes were associated with treatment outcome.

The purpose of this paper is to study functions for computing topic trust in social networks. The focus is to describe classes of functions for propagation of trust among connected peers. Some of them represent properties of relationships between user’s interests on topic and trust trustworthiness. Some other functions describe computational methods of topic trust values along a path and from various paths. Based on these classes of functions, we construct an algorithm for computing topic trust via propagation of topic trust among nodes.

The unveiling of long non-coding RNAs as important gene regulators in many biological contexts has increased the demand for efficient and robust computational methods to identify novel long non-coding RNAs from transcripts assembled with high throughput RNA-seq data. Several classes of sequence-based features have been proposed to distinguish between coding and non-coding transcripts.

Crm1-dependent Nuclear Export Signals (NESs) are clusters of alternating hydrophobic and nonhydrophobic amino acid residues between 10 to 15 amino acids in length. NESs were largely thought to follow simple consensus patterns, based on which they were categorized into 6–10 classes.

Developing student teachers’ teaching competence is a key task of the teacher training programs at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (HCMUE), one of the largest teacher education institutions in Vietnam. However, there remains a huge gap between theoretical knowledge and teaching practice in these programs. This article introduces solutions implemented at the Department of Mathematics, HCMUE since 2015 to bridge the gap. In particular, we focus on the development of a learning sequence in the Teaching Mathematics Practice course based on David Kolb’s experiential learning cycle.

The present study was undertaken on 1070 children (571 boys and 499 girls) of secondary and senior secondary schools of Hisar district of Haryana state. The study was conducted with all children enrolled in classes 6th to 10th from six selected schools (three schools from urban area and three schools from rural area i.e. Ladwa). This exploratory and crosssectional study aimed to identify the extent of bullying, victimization and fighting behaviour in a group of children and analyze the data regarding the gender of those involved in bullying, victimization and fighting behaviour.

An experiment was undertaken by utilizing forty finger millet genotypes for eleven yield and yield contributing characters to assess genetic divergence. The analysis of variance has shown that there was significant variation among the genotypes in all the traits. The multivariate analysis carried out using Mahalanobis D2-statistics, indicated wider genetic diversity in the genotypes of finger millet.

Understanding the association between parental socioeconomic position and self-harm in adolescence is crucial due to its substantial magnitude and associated inequality. Most previous studies have been either of cross-sectional nature or based solely on self-reports or hospital treated self-harm.

Land cover classification is one of the main components of the modern weather research and forecasting models, which can influence the meteorological variable, and in turn the concentration of air pollutants . In this study the impact of using two traditional land use classifications, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), were evaluated. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF, version 3.2.1) was run for the period 18 - 22 August, 2014 (dry season) at a grid spacing of 3 km centered on the city of Manaus.

Learners’ performance is mainly based on the quality of interaction between teachers and students. Such interaction between them is based on suitable environment created through mutual understanding and professional relationships between teachers and students. Despite this fact, this study has observed that many teachers are unaware about establishing mutual relationships and favourable environment for interaction with the students in their classes. Because of the authoritative behaviours of the teachers, students have issues in learning.

A new class of injectable, biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel is reported. This hydrogel is derived from N-succinyl chitosan (SCS) mixed with water-soluble dialdehyde starch (DAS) without using a conventional chemical crosslinker. The hybrid hydrogel is formed owing to the Schiff’s base reaction between amine groups of SCS and dialdehyde groups of DAS to form ACH‚NA group. SCS, DAS, and SCS–DAS hybrid hydrogels were synthesized and then characterized by FTIR analysis spectroscopy.

This paper presents an improved Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLO) and a methodology for obtaining the edge maps of the noisy real life digital images. TLO is a population based algorithm that simulates the teaching–learning mechanism in class rooms, comprising two phases of teaching and learning. The ‘Teaching Phase’ represents learning from the teacher and ‘Learning Phase’ indicates learning by the interaction between learners.

A Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based classification technique is employed for a quantitative global assessment of brain tissue changes by using pixel intensities and contrast generated by b-values in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). A hemisphere approach is also proposed. A GMM identifies the variability in the main brain tissues at a macroscopic scale rather than searching for tumours or affected areas. The asymmetries of the mixture distributions between the hemispheres could be used as a sensitive, faster tool for early diagnosis.

Because the average students are the prevailing part of the student population, it is important but difficult for the educators to help average students by improving their learning efficiency and learning outcome in school tests. We conducted a quasi-experiment with two English classes taught by one teacher in the second term of the first year of a junior high school. The experimental class was composed of average students (N=37), while the control class comprised talented students (N=34). Therefore the two classes performed differently in English subject with mean difference of 13.

This study aims at investigating male and female strategies of directness and indirectness manifest in the speech of the characters in the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. In the light of politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1978), the realizations of direct and indirect strategies of politeness are associated with two types of strategies of face threatening acts (FTAs), namely bald-on-record and offrecord strategies.

Preparing lessons before class is widely recognized as an effective means of increasing student motivation for classroom activities and learning outcome. However, the unclear status of lesson preparation generally discourages teachers and students from maintaining this effective learning strategy. This study applied the self-explanation theory and reading comprehension strategies to design a lesson warm-up mechanism that scaffolds knowledge building. A set of corresponding supporting tools were developed into a blog-based learning system (BBLS) to implement the warm-up process.
