Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are multifunctional effector molecules that often combine direct antimicrobial activities with signaling or immunomodulatory functions. The skin secretions of anurans contain a variety of such bioactive peptides. The identification of AMPs from frog species often requires sacrificing several specimens to obtain small quantities of crude peptides, followed by activity based fractionation to identify the active principles.

Bio-active compounds are of high aesthetic value in pharmaceutical industries but they are not widely explored. These compounds derived from plant, fungi and bacteria cannot really satisfy even a small fraction of the existing demand of the growing population day by day. In recent years, there is a great deal of attention towards cyanobacteria as they are a vast reserve of bioactive molecules with wide pharmaceutical importance.

Cryptic peptides (cryptides) are small bioactive molecules generated via degradation of functionally active proteins. Only a few examples of plant cryptides playing an important role in plant defense have been reported to date, hence our knowledge about cryptic signals hidden in protein structure remains very limited.

Antibacterial activity of six different species of fungal extracts viz., Aspergillus ochraceous, Paecilomyces variotii, Schizophyllum sp., Epicoccum sp., Metarhizium sp., Aspergillus niger were evaluated against ten serotypes of Bacillus thuringiensis to develop new bioactive secondary metabolites from the microbial sources. Fungal crude extracts were isolated by ethyl acetate solvent extraction method and product yields varied from 0.150g to 0.538g. Thin Layer Chromatography was carried out for detecting the small molecule compounds present in the crude extracts.
