Gluconobacter oxydans is a strictly aerobic Gram-negative acetic acid bacterium used industrially for oxidative biotransformations due to its exceptional type of catabolism. It incompletely oxidizes a wide variety of carbohydrates regio- and stereoselectively in the periplasm using membrane-bound dehydrogenases with accumulation of the products in the medium.

Xylose reductase (XR) is responsible for biotransformation of xylose to xylitol and it has gained significant position amongst industrial enzymes due to its role in meeting the demand of xylitol by utilizing agriculture waste. Xylitol is a rare pentose sugar alcohol having a number of therapeutic and pharmaceutical applications. There is a paradigm shift for biotechnological production of xylitol over conventional chemical method.

Neonicotinoid insecticides are widely used nowadays to control many sucking insect-pests in several horticultural crops. They are neurotoxic and systemic in nature and their indiscriminate use may affect both target as well as beneficial insects. They are persistent insecticides and can enter food chain through soil application because of high water solubility. Microbes play an important role in removing toxic insecticides from soil environment and microbial degradation can be considered to be a cost effective mechanism to detoxify the insecticides.

Oil rich effluents are always a menance for many industries in the process of effluent treatment. The process usually requires more complex methods to resolve the issue to reach to disposable effluent standards. Enzymatic degradation was proved to be promising for the efficient treatment of oil rich effluents. Among the hydrolytic enzymes, lipases are the second most widely-used enzymes in industrial applications. A potential lipolytic fungus obtained from a marine soil sample exposed to oil spillage was identified as Aspergillus japonicus MF-1.

The present study explores the bioconversion by Geotrichum candidum of five amino acids to their corresponding α-keto acids used in the treatment of chronic kidney disorder. The amino acid oxidase activity biotransforming amino acids to α-keto acids was detected in biomass as well as extracellular culture fluids of G. candidum. Bioconversion was determined by measuring α-keto acid production along with residual amino acid. There was a 2-fold increase in the amount of α-keto acids produced over a period of 24 hours by permeabilization of biomass when compared to immobilized biomass.

Fexofenadine is an important medicament having significant antihistaminic activity. It is currently being prepared by chemical route which is in numerous stages of development with a yield of less than 10%. In this study, bio-transformation of terfenadine to fexofenadine was investigated using few microbial strains. Among the microbes studied, Absidia corymbifera ATCC14058 showed the highest conversion efficiency in a base line study.

Production of secondary metabolites from plant tissue culture has emerged as a promising and feasible option attracting the attention of scientists worldwide. Plant cell, tissue and organ cultures offer an attractive alternative for homogeneous, controlled production of secondary metabolites, throughout the year, especially when we take commercial demand into account. They not only facilitate the de novo synthesis of novel compounds, but also are able to produce compounds sometimes even in higher amounts than the intact plants.

Natural products are structurally and biologically interesting metabolites, but they have been isolated in minute amounts. The syntheses of such natural products help in obtaining them in bulk amounts. The recognition of microbial biotransformation as important manufacturing tool has increased in chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In recent years, microbial transformation is increasing significantly from limited interest into highly active area in green chemistry including preparation of pharmaceutical products.
