Bioceramic materials

Artificially fabricated hydroxyapatite (HAP) shows excellent biocompatibility with various kinds of cells and tissues which makes it an ideal candidate for a bone substitute material. In this study, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles have been prepared by using the wet chemical precipitation method using calcium nitrate tetra-hydrate [Ca(NO3)2.4H2O] and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate [(NH4)2HPO4] as precursors. The composite scaffolds have been prepared by a freeze-drying method with hydroxyapatite, chitosan, and gelatin which form a 3D network of interconnected pores.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic effect of a bovine bone-derived hydroxyapatite (HA), Boneplus-xs (B-P-XS). The genotoxicity of B-P-XS was investigated by examining the potential of the xenograft (B-P-XS) to induce gene mutation (evaluated using the Ames test), in vitro chromosome aberration (CA), and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) with tests in cultured human peripheral lymphocytes.

Scientists who dedicate their research activity to biomaterials pass through the typical dichotomy that often characterizes the basic researc. On one side is the wish of exploring new frontiers of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, pharmaceutics and all other disciplines to which biomaterials can be applied. The constantly improving scientific knowledge would feed the freedom of attempting new strategies for producing materials with always tailored and improved characteristics.
