  • The rainy crop is of inferior quality, infested with fruit flies and do not keep well, whereas the winter crop produces a better fruit quality, fetch a premium price and has a long shelf life. Hence rainy season crop is regulated to next winter season by pruning. Pruning at different timings have shown different effects on the growth, flowering and yield parameters of the crop. It‟s essential to standardize the pruning time in order to get crop with higher returns.

  • Dextran can be produce by a wide range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria e.g. Leuconostoc mesenteriods and Streptococcus mutant. In the present study dextran was produced from Leuconostoc mesenteriods. L. mesenteriods was isolated from idli batter identified by different biochemical parameters. Sucrose media was used for dextran production. Dextran was also produced using beet juice and compared with sucrose media. Optimum dextran production was considered according to the optimum pH, temperature and substrate concentration. The optimum pH ranged between 6.5 and 7.0.

  • Soil forms an integral part of the ecosystem and at present the quality of a soil is defined not only in terms of its productive capacity, but also by taking the ecosystem into consideration. Consequently, when soil productivity has to be maximized, environmental effects must be given proper consideration. Thus the changes in soil quality caused by different types of land use must first be quantified for attaining sustainability in use and management.
