Ebook "Algae and environmental sustainability (Developments in applied phycology, Volume 7)" presents the dynamic role of algae in a sustainable environment. Two major aspects, namely bioenergy and bioremediation, have been elaborated in various chapter contributed by scientists and teachers from different geographical areas throughout the world. Algal biofuels is an emerging area of equal interest to researchers, industries, and policy makers working or focusing on alternative (i.e. renewable) fuels.

Ebook "Green biomass pretreatment for biofuels production" emphasises the tactical mobile and on-farm scales applications that use green pretreatments and processing technologies without the need of on-site waste treatment. Because of the varieties of different biomasses, no single pretreatment is expected to be the universal choice. Some of the pretreatment methods present niche applications are also discussed.

Switchgrass is a crop with many desirable traits for bioenergy production. Plant genomes have high DNA methylation levels throughout genes and transposable elements and DNA methylation is known to play a role in silencing transposable elements. Here we analyzed methylomes in two switchgrass genotypes AP13 and VS16. AP13 is derived from a lowland ecotype and VS16, typically considered drought-tolerant, is derived from an upland ecotype, both genotypes are tetraploid (2n = 4× = 36).

The article evaluates the biogas as the alternative energy source useful for contributing to the future. Biogas has been found to offer one of the best alternatives due to its economic significance as well as the improved sustainable development through reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The work investigates the production of biogas as an alternative source of energy while outlining its significance in reducing the issues of power energy as well as environmental pollution. The authors analysed the level of bioenergy development in Kazakhstan and around the globe.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a widely adapted perennial forage crop that has high biomass production potential. Enhanced cellulose content in alfalfa stems would increase the value of the crop as a bioenergy feedstock. We examined if increased expression of sucrose synthase (SUS; EC 2.4.1.13) would increase cellulose in stem cell walls.

In this paper, simulation models for recovering biomass from the field of the biorefinery are developed and validated using some industry data and the minimum biomass recovery cost is established based on different strategies employed for recovering biomass. Energy densification techniques are evaluated for their net present worth and the technologies that offer greater returns for the industry are recommended. In addition, a new scheduling algorithm is also developed to enhance the process flow of the management of resources and the flow of biomass.

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a promising bioenergy feedstock because it can be grown on marginal land and produces abundant biomass. Recalcitrance of the lignocellulosic components of the switchgrass cell wall to enzymatic degradation into simple sugars impedes efficient biofuel production.

A new “Green revolution” is needed in world agriculture to increase crop yields for food and bioenergy, because gains from conventional breeding method are less than world population growth. Efforts to increase crop productivity must also consider global change. Carbon-dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases in atmosphere leads to global warming. Photosynthesis is the single most effective natural regulator of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. It is timely to consider what new opportunities exist in the current “omics” era to engineer increases in photosynthesis.
