The overall aim of this study is to determine the most effective way to reduce the radiation dose to the breast during non-breast related CT scans, whilst still maintaining a suitable image quality. This study will attempt to compare the doses and noise of various protocols that can be used for dose reduction, including tube current modulation, bismuth breast shields and manual reduction of tube current.

Many biological C-H activation reactions exhibit nonclassical kinetic isotope effects (KIEs). These nonclassical KIEs are too large (kH/kD 7) and/or exhibit unusual temperature dependence such that the Arrhenius prefactor KIEs (AH/AD) fall outside of the semiclassical range near unity. The focus of this minireview is to discuss such KIEs within the context of the environmentally coupled hydrogen tunneling model.

The octadecaneuropeptide (ODN; QATVGDVNTDRPG LLDLK) and its C-terminal octapeptide (OP; RPGLLDLK), which exert anxiogenic activity, have been previously shown to increase intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca21]i) in cultured rat astrocytes through activation of a metabotropic receptor positively coupled to phospholipase C. It has also been found that the [D -Leu5]OP analog possesses a weak antagonistic activity. The aim of the present study was to synthesize and characterize cyclic analogs of OP and [D -Leu5]OP.

LTB4 12-HD catalyzes the conversion of LTB4 into 12-keto-LTB4 in the presence of NADP1, and plays an important role in inactivating LTB4.

Protein refolding is currently a fundamental problem in biophysics and molecular biology. We have studied the refolding process of frutalin, a tetrameric lectin that presents structural homology with jacalin but shows a more marked biological activity. The initial state in our refolding puzzle was that proteins were unfolded after thermal denaturation or denaturation induced by guanidine hydrochloride, and under both conditions, frutalin was refolded.

Human interleukin-11 (hIL-11) is a pleiotropic cytokine that is involved in numerous biological activities such as hematopoiesis, osteoclastogenesis, neurogenesis and female fertility. IL-11 is obviously a key reagent to study the IL-11 receptors. However, conventional radio-iodination techni-ques lead to a loss of IL-11 bioactivity. Here, we report the construction and the production of a new recombinant human IL-11 (FPDIL-11). In this molecule, a speci®c phosphorylation site (RRASVA) has been introduced at the N-terminus of rhIL-11. ...

The structure–activity relations of a series of synthetic phenoxazone drugs with aminoalkyl side chains of variable length and different terminal groups were investigated by examining their biological activity and DNA complexation affinity. Biological activitywas determined fromtheir ability to induce apoptosis and cell cycle perturbations (activation of cell cycle checkpoints) using the human malignant MOLT-3 cell line. The thermodynamic parameters of drug– DNA complexation were determined by differential scan-ning calorimetry....

Recombinant, bacterially expressed apoptin protein induces apoptosis inhuman tumour cell lines but not innormal cells, mimicking the behaviour of ectopically expressed apoptin. Recombinant apoptin is isolated exclusively as a highly stablemultimeric complex of 30–40monomers, with little, if any,a-helical and b-sheet structure. Despite its apparent disorder, multimeric apoptin is biologically active. Here, we present evidence thatmost of the apoptinmoietieswithin the complex may well share a similar conformation.

The currently accepted model of moult control in crusta-ceans relies entirely on the hypothesis that moult-inhibiting hormone (MIH) and crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone (CHH) repress ecdysteroid synthesis of the target tissue (Y-organ) only during intermoult, and that changes in syn-thesis and/or release of these neurohormones are central to moult control.
