Biologically inactive nature

Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is increasingly being used for spinal applications. However, because of its biologically inactive nature, there are risks of false joint loosening and sinking. PEEK materials are coated with apatite to enhance the osteoconductive properties.

The conventional method in presence of acetic acid gave the target product 4 in 48% for 3 hours. Meanwhile, yield of compound 7 was 15% at the same condition. Retro-Aldol condensation was observed in these cases. Structures of compounds 4 and 7 were elucidated by using IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and MS methods. Biological test showed that compound 4 was active against KB cancer cell line at IC50 = 47.6 ug/L but it was inactive against bacteria.

The natural antimicrobial cationic peptide protegrin-1 displays a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity and rapidly kills pathogens by interacting with their cell membrane. We investigated the structure–activity relation-ships of three protegrin-1 analogues: IB-367 (RGGLCYCRGRFCVCVGR-NH2), BM-1 (RGLCYCRGRFCVCVG-NH2) and BM-2 (RGLCYRPRFV CVG-NH2). Our antimicrobial and antifungal activity studies of these peptides showed that BM-1 was much more active than IB-367 against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi, whereas BM-2 was inactive. ...
