  • Blood pressure (BP) is an important and commonly used vital sign to monitor a patient’s health. Current methods for monitor blood pressure are unsuitable for continuous, uninterrupted measurement of blood pressure outside of a hospital setting as such methods are invasive and could pose risks if complications occur. This research has investigated the possibility of using two photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors to monitor a patient’s pulse at two sites; the ear and the finger.

  • This project is focused on studying the biological effects of low-power RF radiation on the expression and function of mechanosensitive ion channel protein (Piezo-1). To evaluate the effects of long-term exposures, cells were exposed at the frequency of 1800 MHz and power of 17 dBm for a period of 2 and 4 hrs using the transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell exposure system. To study the effects of short-term RF radiation (10 min), exposures emitted from the mobile phone headset at the frequency of 845 MHz and powers of -15 dBm and -5 dBm were applied to cell cultures.

  • This paper presents a proposed low power, low noise capacitively-coupled chopper instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) using body control DC servo loop and low input capacitance applied for biomedical recording. A DC servo loop using body control (DSL-BC) is proposed to reduce the electrode offset and its noise contribution.

  • Biomedical ontologies are increasingly instrumental in the advancement of biological research primarily through their use to efficiently consolidate large amounts of data into structured, accessible sets. However, ontology development and usage can be hampered by the segregation of knowledge by domain that occurs due to independent development and use of the ontologies.

  • The Indian authorities, in contrast, have used this instrument for balance of payments support, to raise financing during times when they had difficulty in accessing international capital markets. The members of Israeli and Indian diaspora have found such bonds attractive because of the opportunities such bonds provide for effective risk management. Furthermore, diaspora communities may have a “home bias” toward their country of origin and be willing to purchase diaspora bonds.

  • The invention of scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by Binnig and his colleagues in 1982 opened up the possibility of imaging material surfaces with spatial resolution much superior to the conventional microscopy techniques. The STM is the first instrument capable of directly obtaining three-dimensional images of solid surfaces with atomic resolution. Even though STM is capable of achieving atomic resolution, it can only be used on electrical conductors. This limitation has led to the invention of atomic force microscope (AFM) by Binnig and his co-workers in 1986.

  • Nanotips have been in increasing demand over the last two decades, owing to their crucial role in the main nanotechnology instruments, like scanning probe microscopes and scanning electron and transmission microscopes. Well-defined ultrasharp tips have also attracted a growing interest in molecular electronics, as they are needed for fabrication and characterization of molecular structures. In this chapter we present several methods that have been explored so far for fabricating such ultrasharp tips, with an emphasis on the most recent technique.

  • The recent wide diffusion of (i) easy-to-use software tools for the implementation of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs); and (ii) communication-oriented instrumentation, often provided with Ethernet interface, in addition to the more traditional GPIB and RS-232 ones, can be particularly exploited in the field of measurement teaching. It is well known, in fact, that for a better understanding of the teaching issues in such a field, the students have to practice with real instrumentation. The computer-based simulations are often inadequate to assure a good experience in that direction.

  • Many cancer patients are diagnosed at a stage in which the cancer is too far advanced to be cured, and most cancer treatments are effective in only a minority of patients undergoing therapy. Thus, there is tremendous opportunity to improve the outcome for people with cancer by enhancing detection and treatment approaches. Biomarkers will be instrumental in making that transition.

  • Gas chromatography has been and it still is, one of the key tools in analytical techniques in many of the advanced research carried out over the globe. This technique has contributed tremendously and was once the main technique in the analysis of specific compounds like volatile compounds, certain pesticides, pharmaceuticals and petroleum products. The advance of this technique has resulted in several tandem instruments with application of other techniques to enhance the results obtained by gas chromatography.

  • Microscopes have always been one of the essential instruments for research in the biomedical field. Radiation-based microscopes (such as the light microscope and the electron microscope) have become trustworthy companions in the laboratory and have contributed greatly to our scientific knowledge. However, although digital techniques in recent years have still enhanced their performance, the limits of their inherent capabilities have been progressively reached.

  • I like playing around with words and letters. You probably know that LASER is an artificial word derived from “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. When starting my lecture on “Laser–Tissue Interactions” I tend to write this derivation on the board. I continue with “LIGHT: Lasers Irradiate Germinated and Healthy Tissues”. Why? Lasers cut everything, if appropriate laser parameters are selected. There is no shield around healthy tissue. And there is no laser that fits all sizes as some clothes do. Lasers never have been some kind of wonder instruments.

  • This short book provides basic information about bioinstrumentation and electric circuit theory. Many biomedical instruments use a transducer or sensor to convert a signal created by the body into an electric signal. Our goal here is to develop expertise in electric circuit theory applied to bioinstrumentation. We begin with a description of variables used in circuit theory, charge, current, voltage, power and energy. Next, Kirchhoff ’s current and voltage laws are introduced, followed by resistance, simplifications of resistive circuits and voltage and current calculations.
