The effect of the crude oils of the produced black cumin seeds on some human pathogenic bacteria was studied. It was found that the crud fixed oil extracted from the seeds of plants has powerful antibacterial properties against this diverse genus of bacteria. However, the influence was different and depending on the tested bacterial strain.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the potential biological activities of black cumin seed oil (BCSO) and wheat germ oil (WGO) on different cell lines. Initially, commercially available BCSO and WGO obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction were analyzed in terms of tocopherol, aliphatic alcohols, and thymoquinone content via HPLC and GC analysis. Cell free antioxidant activities and total phenolic content of both oils were detected by DPPH assay and Folin–Ciocalteu method, respectively.

The experiment was carried out during rabi season during 2016-2017 at Malda District of West Bengal ascertain the best sowing date to get high yield and quality in nigella. The study consisted of four different sowing dates like T1 -Cultivation of Black Cumin in mid-September, T2- Cultivation of Black Cumin in end of September, T3 -Cultivation of Black Cumin in mid. October, T4-Cultivation of Black Cumin in early November, T5: Farmers practice (October- November). The different dates of sowing had significant influence on the morphological, growth, yield and quality attributes of the crop.

In the present investigation, eleven essential oils (Curry Leaf, Ginger, Azowan, Betel leaf, Black cumin, Marjoram, Hedychium, Calamus, Peppermint, Cinnamon, Basil) were screened, in order to assess their antimicrobial activities against three bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Of the eleven essential oils studied, Azowan, Peppermint, Basil, Black cumin and Cinnamon oils showed strong antibacterial activity against the pathogens. The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the oils, ranged between 0.48-125 μl/ml.

A field experiment entitled “studies on sources and levels of organic manures on yield, yield attributes and quality of black cumin” was conducted at RIOF, UAS, GKVK, Bengaluru during rabi 2017. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 12 treatments replicated thrice and the cultivar used was Ajmer Kalonji-1. Results revealed that application of 125 per cent N equivalent through vermicompost recorded significantly higher seed yield and fixed oil yield (723 and 261 kg ha-1, respectively). This was attributed mainly by enhanced yield attributes like days to 50 per cent flowering (52.

Cultural and morphological variability studies on three different media viz., Potato Dextrose Agar, Richard’s Synthetic Agar and Czapek’s Dox Agar revealed considerable variation among the isolates of A. burnsii indicated the existence of variability in the pathogen. Moreover, Potato Dextrose Agar and Czapek’s Dox Agar were found as an excellent media to support the growth and spore formation of isolates of A. burnsii, respectively.
