Although dothideomycetous fungi are typically haploid, the reference H. werneckii strain has a diploid genome consisting of two subgenomes with a high level of heterozygosity.

  • Volcanic ejecta or lahar can serve as an inorganic support for the immobilization of invertase. Pampanga and Bicol lahar samples were pretreated by ignition at 550o C for 5 hrs followed by concentrated hydrochloric acid treatment, activated by reaction with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) and then covalently bound to invertase using glutaraldehyde as linker. Chemical tests confirmed the attachment of APTS to lahar and glutaraldehyde to silanized lahar. The quantity of immobilized invertase on Pampanga white, Pampanga black and Bicol black lahar were 98.73%, 96.73% and 84.27%, respectively.

  • Aureobasidium pullulans, popularly known as black yeast, is one of the most widespread saprophytic fungus associated with wide range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. The fungus has widely been employed in production of an economically important polysaccharide Pullulan. Pullulan is a linear glucan made mainly of maltotriose repeating units. This gives the polysaccharide structural flexibility and enhances solubility.

  • A lipid producing isolate (LPI 65) was identified by a molecular genetics technique as Pichia occidentalis MH879824.1 was investigated for its ability to produce biodiesel. The isolate was screened for its ability to accumulate lipids within the cells by culturing on nitrogen-limited medium (NLM) and using Sudan black B staining technique. Estimation of lipid content % was performed. The effect of different glucose concentrations in NLM on dry biomass and lipid weight were conducted and results showed that the best concentration of glucose was 70 g/L.

  • Pulses being important source of protein and micronutrients find its place in national food security. Plant probiotic microbes play an important role in producing safe and nutritious pulses. In this work we characterized plant probiotic yeast from different sources and investigated its multifunctional activity in promoting the growth of black gram. Of the twenty isolates, two isolates one from the seeds of pomegranate (POY5) and the other one from grapes (GRY4) were selected for the study.
