In order to assess genetic diversity of a set of 41 Caricaceae accessions, this study used 34 primer pairs designed from the conserved domains of bacterial leaf blight resistance genes from rice, in a PCR based approach, to identify and analyse resistance gene analogues from various accessions of Carica papaya, Vasconcellea goudotiana, V. microcarpa, V. parviflora, V. pubescens, V. stipulata and, V. quercifolia and Jacaratia spinosa.

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by the vascular pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is one of the most serious diseases leading to crop failure in rice growing countries. A total of 37 resistance genes against Xoo has been identified in rice.

In Asia, rice is the most important, widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world's human population. Bacterial leaf blight (BB), caused by the bacterium, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is one of the major disease affecting Basmati rice production in India. CSR-30 is a very popular high yielding, salt tolerant Basmati variety widely grown in Haryana, India but highly susceptible to BB.

One hundred rice genotypes were analyzed to evaluate the genetic polymorphism and identification of resistant lines to bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae using simple sequences repeat (SSR) markers. A total of 38 alleles were detected by seven polymorphic markers showing highly polymorphic across all genotypes with an average of 5.42 alleles per polymorphic marker. The marker RM-21, RM-122 and RM-224 produced maximum 6 alleles.

Rice crop accounts for nearly a third of the total area under food grains in India and is the staple food for a significant portion of the world‟s population. Widely varying factors influence the growth of rice in different rice growing areas and render the crop susceptible to various pathogenic and non-pathogenic diseases, resulting in extensive damage of grain and straw yield. Bacterial leaf blight disease of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is a serious menace to rice production in India, besides other rice producing countries.

The 60 F1s (derived by line x tester analysis) along with their twenty three parents and two check varieties (Narendra Usar dhan 3 and IR 28) were tested against the Bacteria leaf blight, under sodic soil during Kharif, 2015 at the Research Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Narendra Nagar (Kumarganj), Faizabad (U. P.). The experiment was conducted in sodic soil at pH =9.2, EC =2.21dSm-1 and ESP 45%.

The present investigation was undertaken to assess the reaction of the hybrid “Arka Rakshak” towards three major diseases prevalent in the district and thereby find an eco-friendly and simple solution to manage all these devastating diseases for which farmers are spending lots of money and time. The results clearly revealed that 40.4 % higher fruit size, 38.8 % more numbers of fruits per plant and an average of 103.9 % more crop yield was recorded, there was no BLB incidence, the severity of ALB was as low as 10 %, TLCV incidence was negligible and found to be just 1 % in Arka Rakshak.

Bacterial rice leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), has a massive impact on the quality and productivity of rice. Besides BLB resistant rice cultivars, herbal extracts and nanosilver have increasingly demonstrated their important roles in controlling the disease as alternatives to synthetic chemical pesticides.
