Serum lactate has long been used to evaluate hypoxia and predict prognosis in critically ill patients, however, discrepancy in lactate measurements between different sites have not been recognized as a useful tool for monitoring hypoxia and evaluating outcome.

Assessing the ventilatory status of non-intubated infants in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a constant challenge. Methods to evaluate ventilation include arterial blood gas analysis (ABG), which is invasive and intermittent, and transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring (PtcCO2), which, while non-invasive, is also intermittent.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common endocrinopathies observed in dogs. The main clinical manifestations are polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, weight loss and glucosuria. The etiology of diabetes mellitus is similar in dogs, cats and humans and is probably multifactorial (genetic, immune and environmental factors). Diabetes mellitus is described to be deficiency or absolute lack of insulin secretion is divided into two types: insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Various breed susceptibilities have been reported.

Acute pharyngitis is a common illness of childhood most frequently associated with Group A Streptococcus (GAS) and carrier state quiet often remains undiagnosed in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This prospective study was undertaken to assess the burden of GAS in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder attending pediatric clinics in a tertiary care centre at Chennai. Throat swabs were obtained for culture from 50 ADHD children aged 5 – 15 years with symptoms of sore throat and 50 from apparently asymptomatic children with ADHD.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Trypanosoma evansi infections on arterial blood gases of experimentally infected rats. Two groups with eight animals each were used; group A (uninfected) and group B (infected). Infected animals were daily monitored through blood smears that showed high parasitemia with 30 trypanosomes per field (1000•) on average, 5 days post-infection (PI). Arterial blood was collected at 5 days PI for blood gas analysis using an automated method based on dry-chemistry.

Assessment: Several differences in lung anatomy and physiology place infants at theoretically greater risk than older children for respiratory failure. Despite this, respiratory failure is rare in infancy. Close monitoring, using a combination of the parameters other than PEF (Chapter 4, Component 4: Figure 4.4-1), will permit a fairly accurate assessment. Breathlessness sufficiently severe to prevent feeding is an important symptom of impending respiratory failure. Oxygen saturation, which should be measured in infants by pulse oximetry, is normally greater than 95 percent.
