The aim of our study is to test procalcitonin (PCT) as surrogate marker of identification of Candida spp. by blood culture (BC) and real-time-polymerase chain reaction (PCR), whether alone or in association with bacteria, in septic patients. Methods: We performed a single-centre retrospective study. We reviewed the clinical charts of patients with a diagnosis of severe sepsis or septic shock treated at our general intensive care unit from March 2009 to March 2013.

Sepsis and other infectious complications are major causes of mortality and morbidity in patients after cardiac surgery. Whereas conventional blood culture (BC) suffers from low sensitivity as well as a reporting delay of approximately 48–72 h, real-time multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based technologies like “SeptiFast” (SF) might offer a fast and reliable alternative for detection of bloodstream infections (BSI).

The main mechanism of resistance in A. fumigatus involves incorporation of tandem repeats in the promoter region of cyp51A, along with point mutations in the gene sequence. Resistant isolates tend to arise either due to excessive use of azole fungicides in the agricultural fields, from where they reach human through sporulation; or by prolonged treatment of patients with azole drugs. The early diagnosis of aspergillosis is very crucial for successful treatment of a patient.

Blood stream infections are very common in paediatric age group and are one of the common causes of morbidity and mortality. Septicaemia gradually leads to serious consequences like shock, multi organ failure, DIC etc. Timely identification of causative pathogen by blood culture (gold standard) is important. Antibiogram also helps us to elevate consciousness on resistance problems and recognise prospect to decrease the use of inappropriate antibiotics. The study was undertaken to evaluate major bacterial isolates causing septicaemia and their antibiogram pattern.

The objectives of this study were to identify the prevalence of aminoglycosides resistance among isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii complex causing BSIs, to assess the possible synergistic effect of aminoglycosides drugs combinations with imipenem and ciprofloxacin against resistant Acinetobacter baumannii complex strains and detection of AMEs and 16S rRNA methylase genes associated with aminoglycosides resistance in these isolates.

Resistant and specially Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) Gram negative isolates from the cases of Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI) are a serious challenge for the treatment to clinicians. Present study was undertaken for phenotypic characterization and susceptibility pattern of Gram negative bacterial isolates from cases of CLABSI in a tertiary care institute. Materials this descriptive cross sectional hospital based study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital over a period of one and half year from January 2012 to June 2013.

The aim of the work was to study the blood culture isolates and their antibiogram. A total of 1070 blood samples were collected from suspected cases of blood stream infection from August 2015 to July 2016, they were processed aerobically and Antibiogram pattern was studied. Cultures were positive in 277 (25.89%) cases.

Blood stream infections can lead to life threatening sepsis and require immediate antimicrobial treatment. Blood culture is an essential tool for the investigation of clinically suspected sepsis. The present study has been conducted to describe the profile of bacterial isolates from blood cultures and their antibiotic resistance. This is prospective study of 273 blood cultures, collected from clinically suspected cases of bacteraemia studied over a period of five months in a tertiary care hospital in Ujjain, M.P.

Blood stream infections are very common in the paediatric age group and these are one of the common causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates and children. Objectives of the study are to isolate the different organisms from Blood cultures of Neonates by BACTEC method and know their Antibiotic susceptibility patterns. We processed 100 Blood samples of the Neonates from PICU of NIMS Medical College and Hospital between January and June 2016 (06 months).

The aim of the present study was to determine the distribution of pathogens and their antibiotic profile against the commonly used antibiotic therapy. A total of 5614 blood specimens from patients were received from intensive care units in Villupuram Medical College, Tamilnadu, India, were cultured by standard microbiological procedures for the isolation of pathogens.

Blood stream infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among neutropenic patients. Despite use of antibiotics and antifungals FN remains a therapeutic challenge. It prolongs hospital stay, increases health-care costs, and compromises chemotherapy efficacy in patients with malignancy who commonly experience neutropenia. This study depicts the microbiological profile, antibiotic sensitivity pattern and relation of BSI and degree of neutropenia in the neutropenic patients.

Enterococci, initially considered as normal commensal of intestinal tract have recently emerged as a medically important pathogen. Incidence of enterococccal infection is significantly high in patients suffering from urinary tract infection, blood stream infection and surgical sites infection. Nosocomial enterococcal infection is also common in organ transplants recipients cancer patients and debilitated patients receiving broad spectrum antibiotics. One of the important causes of development of multi drug resistant Enterococci is antibiotic selective pressure.

Blood stream infections are very common in the pediatric age group and these are one of the common causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates and children. In developing countries, the rate of blood stream infections in children is about 20– 50% and it is estimated that one in five neonates is suffering from and blood infection. The present study was undertaken to determine the etiological agents causing blood stream infection and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns in pediatric patients.

Blood stream infections can lead to life threatening sepsis and require immediate antimicrobial treatment. Blood culture is an essential tool for the investigation of clinically suspected bacteremia or septicemia. A timely detection of organism type and antibiotic susceptibility testing is critical for the effective treatment of the patient. Illness associated with blood stream infection ranges from self-limiting infections to life-threatening sepsis that require rapid and aggressive antimicrobial treatment.

Central Venous Catheter (CVC) remains a suitable form of vascular access for patients with chronic hemodialysis and has been estimated that almost 30-40% of patients are dependent on CVCs for their vascular access. Aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of Catheter Related Blood Stream Infections (CRBSIs). A Cross sectional study was undertaken after ethical committee approval, Blood samples (5ml-10ml) were collected from catheter site under sterile precautions and Blood Culture (Bac„T‟Alert) performed and isolates grown were identified by routine methods as per standards.

Nosocomial infection is a key factor in determining clinical outcomes among patients admitted in intensive care units. Studies on nosocomial infections in ICUs found that respiratory tract infections, blood stream infections, urinary tract infections and soft tissue infections are the common nosocomial infections in ICUs. These organisms causing nosocomial infections are highly resistant to antibiotics. Early recognition of bacteria and appropriate antimicrobial therapy are essential for controlling infection, preventing the morbidity and improve the quality of life.
