Pharyngeal packing (PP) is commonly performed to reduce the incidence of perioperative blood ingestion (PBI) in nasal surgery (NS), and thus the incidence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). This study examined the effects of PP on the perioperative gastric volume (GV) and PONV in patients undergoing NS, by ultrasound assessment.

The Contagious Distemper, which has become the Reproach of our Faculty here for above a Month past, is more violent than that at Marseilles; it breaks out in Carbuncles, Buboes, livid Blisters, and purple Spots; the first Symptoms are grievous Pains in the Head, Consternations, wild Looks, a trembling Voice, a cadaverous Face, a Coldness in all the extreme Parts, a low unequal Pulse, great Pains in the Stomach, Reachings to Vomit, and these are follow'd by Sleepiness, Deliriums, Convulsions, or Fluxes of Blood, the Forerunners of sudden Death.

What compels us to enter the field of veterinary medicine? More importantly, what keeps us here? You may wonder why, when you have been on your feet for ten hours with no lunch break, when you are covered with blood, feces, and vomit, when you have just argued with your boss and you’ve had to euthanize your favorite patient. Yet you’ll wake up the next day, pull on your scrubs, walk through the doors of your practice, and face another day of poop and puppy kisses, high maintenance clients and thankful coworkers, senile cats and wary Rottweilers, all because of your love for this profession.
